This sample is 5.1 with 3 ref frames and no problem on my ATI 4550, DXVA working fine under WinXP:

Feature requests

Any chance that the menu bar can be toggled on/off like all the other UI elements?
What would be cool too if that thin border around the video could be removed when having MPC's window maximized.

Do the "renderer settings" (from EVR CP) apply to the new Sync Renderer? If not, these options should be disabled in the GUI to avoid confusion.

I've tried to disable everything that doesn't apply both in Options and the Renderer options menu. One option that i have knowingly omitted to disable is "Wait for flushes". It doesn't do anything today in Sync Renderer. It is bundled with the other GPU flush alternatives in the original code. So Resizer, D3D fullscreen, EVR Buffers should apply to Sync Renderer as well (have to check the Reinitialization... option now that you mention it...) I will fix these later. -A

I tried your sample. It works fine (no tearing) on my XP machine with a low end gfx board, bicubic and a sync offset of 17 ms. In some cases this renderer is a bit more prone to tearing than the EVR custom because the latter has more elaborate GPU control code. I will try to add that code to the Sync Renderer too. -A

That sample has an incorrect header, in fact its simply L4.1 (the header is a bad way to check for level compliance)

Hm, i have more such samples, that is strange...

I bet there was an update ~1 yeas ago in ATI drivers allow play 5.1 up to 5 ref. frames on ATI 4xxx GPUs.

BTW, can you provide "correct" 5.1 sample with 1-4 ref frames to test?

So, I just reinstalled W7 32bit with a fresh install of MPC-HC. Previously, I was running W7 RC. For whatever reason, I no longer need to have MPC's Video Decoder to have DXVA enabled. By unchecking h264 for both DXVA and ffmpeg, I allow Microsoft's built-in h264 decoder to load, as clearly shown in the filter list. Much to my surprise, CPU load remains under 8% on my paultry 2.2 GHz CPU with DXVA running flawlessly. How in the world is this happening? The RC version of W7 certainly didn't operate this way, as the MS decoder would completely choke on 1080p.

Well, oddly it never allowed DXVA from within MPC-HC on my previous W7 RC install. I assumed that only WMP could take advantage of DXVA using MS's h264 decoder. It appears now that any DS player can use it.

I never used the RC, but maybe they limited the decoder there. On the RTM (final) release it does indeed work w/ any DirectShow based player.

I have win7 rtm 32 bit and nvidia 7600gt and later 9800gt. 1486 is the first MPC build on xvidvideo.ru that gives me playback on a mix of 1080p mkv and blue ray m2ts without stutter on my TV hooked up as secondary monitor. Previously, I had to set my TV as primary monitor (not convenient at all) or use D3D full screen (which has its own drawbacks). So a big THANK YOU to ar-jar and all the devs

Like i said you need to completely ignore that line that says "level whatever"

The real levels are technical limits.
Read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Levels

Using an Intel GMA500 with W7 (without Aero) most h.264 720p and several 1080p clips play correctly using EVR Custom renderer (Microsoft decoder).
However, some 1080p clips play with low frame rate in full screen - but the are ok in windowed mode and even in D3D fullscreen mode. Is there an explanation for this (bad drivers maybe)? Is it possible (and does it make sense?) to modify the D3D fullscreen mode so it has an effect only if mpc-hc is sent into fullscreen?

Not true... at least on my system from Beta 2 the Microsoft Decoder utilized DXVA (low CPU) for H264... VC1 is a different story...

Im now running RTM with the same results..

Im a IGP Nvidia 9400.. it may depend on your video card support

After getting some new computer parts; motherboard, cpu, ram, and graphics card, and reinstalled Win7 Ultimate x64, i've had a problem with playing HD .mkv files and subtitles. Getting the message that "atikmdag stopped responding, and the graphic driver restored itself successfully". When this happens, the screen goes black, still hearing the sound though, and when it's finished "restoring" it self, the player get's minimized, though the computer is mainly not responsive, so i have to use the task manager to quit MPC HC.

This only happens when i add subtitles to the videos i watch. And only with .mkv and HD files, or that i know of, haven't tested other file types and subtitles yet.

The computer i had before was:
Asus P5K-E
Intel Q6600 @ 3GHz
ATI 4980 1GB

This worked fine.

After the upgrade:
Asus Rampage II Extreme
Intel i7 920 @ 4GHz
ATI 5870 1GB

This works, but having problems with .mkv hd files and subtitles.

DXVA enabled ofc.
So do DXVA and subtitles have a problem with the newest cards from ATI, or is there something else weird with my new computer?

This is exactly my configuration and I haven't had a chance to test ar-jar's work yet, can you give your configuration please?
