MKV playback extremely fast

Hello,
Lately I have been having a major problem with .mkv files. The playback has gotten extremely fast.
Video is jumping forward and playing at a very fast rate,
I searched for a while, if someone else has had this kind of problem, but all I could find is a solution to mp3 files, not mkv.
I tried the same mkv files with every media player I have installed. The thing is - not all mkv files have this problem, only like every 5th out of 100.
How can I fix this? What seems to be the cause?
Thanks

Run media info on the files with the problem and on the files without and compare them. Could be they are using different formats (e.g. VC-1 vs. H.264). Also try a different player/splitter/decoder.

Did you followed the same procedure in obtaining the 5% and the 95%?
Are those SD, HD, which codec?
Are the time codes ok?

Nothing real special about the files. What player are you using?

The problem seems to be connected with MPC player. I tried installing VLC player, and the video plays back just normally, however, I want to keep using MPC player with MadVR renderer, because the quality is really noticeable between MPC with MadVR and standard VLC player.
Why is that I can playback like thousands (not exaggerating) video files (including MKV format) with MPC MadVR and have absolutely no problem, but every now and then like 5% of mkv files are having this playback problem?

Okay, I found a solution -
I enabled matroska internal filter. In MPC player: Options->Internal Filters->Matroska checkbox
But does this mean that I will experience lower quality because of an internal filter?
Any other way to fix this?

No, a splitter has no influence on the quality at all. It just reads the tracks out of a container and passes them onto the appropriate decoders.

Maybe you were just awaking and like you were tired, you though it was fast. Just a guess.

not sure if its related to this problem but it seems mkv2rls default settings at least are to blame for some STBs and related WDTV USER playback problems etc

namely the apparent default "audio sampling frequency" setting of "0" rather than the real Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz.

i came across this working fix while looking into a current FFMpeg re-encoding for streaming test with the bad mkv2rls audio setting stopping ffmpeg in its encoding tracks.

even though the original mkv file seems to play fine on most SW players, and its a hard problem to notice the wrong default settings i thought id mention it here so other Google searches find the mkv2rls reference and potential libebml v0.7.9 + libmatroska v0.8.1 problems and fix easily.

"Files written with mkv2rls are now notorious for having audio problems. The reason for the problem stems from an apparent default "audio sampling frequency" setting of "0". This setting needs to be changed to the correct setting before the file can work properly.

Running your .mkv file through MediaInfo will show the proper audio sampling frequency.

MediaInfo example:

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension : CM (complete main)
Codec ID : A_AC3
Duration : 51mn 36s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 142 MiB (10%)
Title : English
Language : English

To change the audio sampling frequency to the correct setting, we will use the MKVMerge (mkvmerge GUI) software. The latest build is mkvmerge GUI v4.9.1

You can get it here: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkv...downloads.html

Once downloaded, install the MKVMerge software by opening the mkvtoolnix-unicode-4.9.1-setup.exe (there's a portable version available as well that requires no installation).

When you're asked if you want a shortcut placed on your desktop, click "Yes". You can always move it to where you want later.

Once installed:

1) Open MKVMerge (mkverge GUI)
2) Click on "File" (top left hand corner)
3) Click on "Header editor"
4) In the "Header editor" window, click on "File" once again
5) Click on "Open" to find/choose the IMMERSE .mkv file (it could take a few seconds to open)
6) Once it opens, click on the "+" just to the left of "Audio track 2"
7) In the drop-down menu, highlight "Audio sampling frequency"
8) In the window to the right, change the "current value" from 0 to 48000
9) Click on "File" again
10) Click on "Save" (it could take a few seconds to save)
11) Click on "Quit"
12) Close MKVMerge (mkverge GUI)

**If, for some reason, the file still does not play after applying the fix, you can try remuxing it**

How to remux a file with MKVMerge:

1) Open MKVMerge (mkvmerge GUI)
2) Click on "Add" to find your file.
3) In the "Tracks, chapters and tags" box, highlight the first line (V_MPEG4/ISO...)
4) After highlighting the line, click on the "Extra options" tab just below.
5) On the "Compression" line, open the drop down menu and make sure "None" is entered. This is very important.
6) In the "Tracks, chapters and tags" box, highlight the second line (A_AC3...)
7) Follow steps 4-5 again
8) The new file will be in the same directory as the original file, but will now have a (1) appended to the file name.
9) Click on "Start muxing", found at bottom left.

The muxing should take between 5-30 minutes max., depending on your computer. If you need to, disable any other CPU-intensive applications during this time -- the muxing will go faster.

Hope this helps.

MKV2RLS is a muxer used by pirate groups isn't it? If so, I guess this post is a rule six violation.

Cheers,

That sounds like fishing. Pirates also use x264 to encode their releases, its now also illegal to talk about it?

No, but rule 6 prevents the discussions on all media that is not legally obtained. Since the user had no idea what muxer/encoder has been used, it follows that he didn't encode/mux the file himself, and this falls under rule 6.

No, I mean the muxer, not the codec. Try googling MKV2RLS, it's not seemingly available for download anywhere, and all mention of it seems to be people having problems with their scene encodes.

Fishing, or stating the bloody obvious, whichever works :-)

you can probably also remux the file with the latest mkvmerge to fix the issue, though it seems easier to just use a different splitter (lav splitter is a great one btw)

Actually, unless he admitted to downloading a warez release, there's no way for you to know if it was illegal or not since some countries still allow copies among friends. Also, who died and made you mod?
