libAften good for AC3?

I am using eac3to to converts some DTS content to AC3. I am using a commercial decoder for DTS and could purchase if necesary one for AC3 if one of my existing ones wouldn't work. Anway, is there a better AC3 encoder that I could use to encode the DTS back to AC3 with eac3to? I know I was able to plugin my own decoder for DTS but not sure about encoding. I do occasionally at the loud points get some crackling in the speakers, but not sure if that's the decoder or the source.

Thanks.
