HDR problems

i've been having some issues with HDR and can't figure out what the problem is. using madVR + potplayer + windows 11 + QN90A. i've always had HDR in windows display settings turned off. when i played a HDR movie my display when "switch" to HDR mode. i could always tell when this happens cause the display would turn black for a second. another way i could tell was by pressing control J in potplayer. it would say NV HDR. lately movies have been looking dull and washed out. i noticed it's not switching to HDR cause the screen doesn't go black when i start a movie. so i went in to windows display settings and turned on HDR manually. it does look better but still doesn't seem right. when i control J it doesn't say NV HDR, it says OS HDR. i've never seen this before and i'm assuming this is basically fake HDR similar to auto HDR for SDR content. since the screen isn't going black when the movie starts i'm pretty sure something isn't right but can't figure out what.

OS HDR means HDR is enabled via Windows.
NV HDR means HDR is enabled through NVIDIA API in madVR.

Turn off HDR in Windows amd do a reboot. HDR should work again.

What GPU? What driver version?
