What kind of artefact it is ?
Hi,
I'm doing a comparison between a VHS that a lab captured into a DVD years ago (left) and mine (right) with the same VHS source (My raw is at top). I have a overall better definition but also serious yellow/blue halo, and "white border" arround people. Chroma shifting as been done already (-6) and chroma denoise also with vsTemporalsmoother/ccd. What kind of artefact is it ? Can this be caused by my VCR ? Thanks ! (Link to full sized image https://rehost.diberie.com/Picture/Get/f/32380) |

VCR guilty ? I would guess yes.
I suggest to use a prosumer S-VHS deck for playback. The upper prosumer Panasonics and JVCs are good for that, the ones that were more than 1500 DM (or 1000 GBP, or 1200 USD) Was very happy with a NV-HS950, and still I am, very detailed picture while chroma still sits at its source line. Just now working with a Panasonic AG-7750, this one saves the hardest TBC problems.

I dont have this kind of (big) artefact on other tape, its weird. But this tape seem to have worked better some time ago or on different device at least.
I'm using a S-VHS JVC HR-7955 (S-video) to a Magewell Pro Capture. Or maybe the tape degraded during this few years. I dont know. |

What Sharc said.
Tape degradation wouldn't look like that. Do you work from a second (third) generation tape by any chance ? Seeing chroma fallen this far apart, I mean.

I dont know about the generation of the tape. I'll look into it. It may be a copy of a copy etc... But I have the one that was given to the photo lab i'm pretty sure.
I will look into my VCR setting but as far as i remember i'm in EDIT mode en B.E.S.T off. (The 7955 doesnt have TBC tho) Thanks for the help ! Last edited by jeffk; 1st November 2020 at 01:11. |

The 7955 has Digipure, so a TBC and more:
Digital 3R Edge Correction. Video Stabilizer. Picture Control Edit/Soft/Sharp. Maybe check those settings.
