Hello,

Very quickly, for those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc31 new version.

I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality.

Normally this new version gains that little extra precision, so normally at -q14 setting, NHW should have a competitive precision, while still keeping its neatness. From -q12 to -q8 settings, there is the psychovisual model, for now this model is optimized for neatness, and it is maybe not totally precision's best friend in its current state... So for now high compression in NHW has a good/competitive precision and very high compression puts more forward neatness...

Cheers,
Raphael

Damn, how much more precision and a better visual quality can a 512x512 image get..

Yes, so sorry for disturbing the forum that much with my updates... Actually, I don't know how much more I will be able to improve precision and visual quality... but however now I think that this last version has a good and competitive precision for -q23 to -q13 settings, and focuses on neatness for -q12 to -q8 settings.

For the 512x512 size, that's a pity that the niche industry is not interested in NHW, because if they would, they could have delegated a team to help me to adapt NHW to any image size, as I really need it as this extremely huge task is impossible for me alone...

Cheers,
Raphael

Not really,... aside from the downloads, sadly there seems to be nothing to see there.

Yes, very sorry my demo page is quite terrible and near useless.I would dream to have the skills to make a real website for NHW, with for example more technical details and more results/performance details, but this is completely out of my forces and out of my time...

For now there is just the binaries download update on my blogspot and the source code update on my GitHub... yes that's not really something exciting for a new release...

Raphael

Since this thread does not seem to go anywhere:

Has the way you compute 'neatness' improved since https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.p...35#post1903235 ?

If you are looking for folks to get interested, you use some unknown/uncommon metric, you should showcase on your homepage that it makes sense to use this metric.
Atm. you got a homepage with the download and basically no information. Over at github you write:
Quote:
The NHW codec presents some innovations and a unique approach: more image neatness/sharpness, and aims to be competitive with current codecs like for example x265 (HEVC), Google WebP,...
but that's it. No paper, documentation, demonstration that what you are 'describing' makes any sense.

Maybe showcase x265/x265/av-1 vs your encoder based on that on your homepage.
Even at 512x512 (which even some trashy cameras will drop in the not too far future) it should be possible to come up with some demonstration.

Cu Selur

Hello,

Just a very quick message as I have big difficulties to connect to the forum this last week.

@Selur, no my neatness metrics is not ready and usable for now...

Very quickly, for those very interested in NHW, I have released the v0.3.0-rc34 new version.

I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality.

This is just a simple fix but this new version continues to gain that extra precision while keeping NHW neatness.

Very quickly, for those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc36 new version.

This is just a small fine-tuning of the nhw_kernel weights computation, but this new version has then more precision and a better visual quality.

Yes this is again an incremental slight visual improvement.

Yes this one is quite a slight incremental visual improvement.

More at: https://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

Else I have read on the MPEG website that MPEG will maybe issue a Call for Evidence for a next-generation of video codec in 2025. I'll maybe try to submit NHW technology, but I stay completely realistic, my chances are extremely low. Do you think however it is worth to prepare a submission or my chances are null?

Concerning MPEG Future video coding new project, I'll have to wait for the details of the Call for Evidence, but someone told me that I did not understand they were looking for next-generation in terms of PSNR/SSIM.Yes this case, it will be useless to submit NHW.

Hello,

Very sorry for disturbing you, just to let you know very quickly that yes I made a confusion, another expert answered me and confirmed that I completely misunderstood/misinterpreted the MPEG Future video coding new project. This expert told me that a wavelet technology will be absolutely not of consideration for this new video codec, they will mostly confirm ,follow, and improve the MPEG/JVET existing work on NNVC and ECM, with also an emphasis on hardware for these codecs, like CPU and GPU synergy.

My side, I will try to finish NHW next year and have a satisfying prototype/proof-of-concept.I will however considerably slow-down my work on NHW in 2025 I think, as I have other priorities now.

Cheers,
Raphael
