Vobsub subtitles in Mkv for cropped video

I use mencoder to rip subtitles into vobsub format and to encode my video. I don't scale my video, but I crop it and then specify the aspect ratio in the Matroska container. The video looks great. The problem is that the subtitles don't.

The subtitles appear to be shorter and fatter than what was originally intended and as a result even the edges look more jagged than normal. I'm not sure what causes this or what to do about it. Any ideas?

Well, VobSub subtitles are basically pictures, so it's normal that if you play them on a video with a different resolution that the one they were originally played on, they will be distorted. Most likely some of the common subtitling tools like SubtitleCreater will let you change the frame size without altering the subs.

So, what about option called "Par compensation" in new build of DirectVobSub . Did u tried it yet?
U have to play video in any DShow player, and have DirectVobSub installed.

I'm working with linux here, so all the Direct Show stuff doesn't apply. But the responses from you both have pointed me down the right path.

From what I can tell, there is nothing wrong with the encoded video. The problem is with the players which do not correctly display anamorphic subtitles. It was with VLC that I noticed this. But what I did find was that mplayer is displaying them correctly. I may file a bug with VLC.

Thanks for your help.
