Thank you very much for the fresh build of mplayer
But I had no idea ffmpeg could be so fat

It is a difference between "Zeranoe-like" in previous builds and "as much as works under GPL3" in this one... probably a lot of libraries hardly anyone would ever use.

Is anyone able to explain why mplayer supports the "avs" (AviSynth) demuxer when built for Win32, but not for Win64?

It seems not to be related to the configuration phase. For both builds, CONFIG_AVISYNTH_DEMUXER appears to be disabled in config.mak and config.h, so I have to guess it is somehow explicitly added for Win32 (but only Win32)?

According to comparisons between configure files, I believe that mplayer only implements loading of Win32 DLLs (e.g. as codecs), what a Win64 build does not support. But loading Win64 DLLs is not implemented at all.

Well, I can only conclude that some parts of the MPlayer project remain "suspended in time" so to speak, and not only w.r.t. the Windows builds...
error messages like "Your system is too slow to play this video!" and "Video stream is mandatory!" were written when Avisynth was 32-bit only and 64-bit editions of Windows were uncommon...

And last but not least, the year is 2020 and MPlayer still refuses to display image-based subtitles in any color that is not white or light-gray

—¿how great is that?

It seems to have a few very distinct advantages over ffmpeg, so that e.g. Selur still supports it in Hybrid ... but maybe you only need to know how to motivate ffmpeg developers to implement "the rest".

One advantage: An own codec pack for very rare formats.

Then please teach us how to make ffmpeg convert VivoActive videos (*.viv) like mencoder does.

Nobody in its sane mind still uses vivo active videos. I was talking about more recent formats, that mplayer does not support at all even ffmpeg have support for such codecs.

Encode in .viv I wouldn't, but once in while there are still such files around and there arises the need to play them back.
