Shading

I have a DVD of some rather poor film that I'm trying to improve. Mostly it is the standard problems but there is also a certain amount of "shading". Most of the picture (probably 4 fifths) is uniform luma level then the levels rise sharply on the far right of the image.

I can find no filters to correct this. As it is not an uncommon film fault, my guess is that what I call shading actually has another name and I'm barking up the wrong google.

Can anyone enlighten me, please.

Sure that's not intentional? It looks like (from the jpg) the black outline of the crown symbol actually sits on top of the "shading" bleeding in from the right.

More likely to be due to sharpening, isn't it?

Perhaps, but it doesn't strike me as such. Can we see another alternate screengrab? Perhaps one where the shading bleeds onto a more dynamic part of the image?
