Using Chrome to view HEVC videos

Wow. It's been a while. I always remembered this as the place to go for expert advice.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why Chrome will play HEVC videos on my laptop but not on my desktop PC. Both are running Windows 10, same version of Chrome, same 8-bit 4:2:0 HEVC / h.265 video.
I heard Chrome would not play HEVC unless the GPU could provide hardware decoding, so I actually went and bought a new GPU for my PC (one which I first verified had hardware-based HEVC decoding) but it's still not working. I just get the sound and no video.
I went to chrome://gpu and saw
Quote:
* Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
* Video Encode: Hardware accelerated
but further down the page there's a "Video Acceleration Information" table where both the "encoding" and "decoding" rows are empty. On my laptop, this table is filled with a bunch of video formats.
The PC has a GT 1030 graphics card and the laptop has an integrated AMD Radeon 740M

Old drivers

I figured this out. I stupidly installed drivers from 2017. This morning they automatically updated and I can play HEVC in Chrome!

It's the Nvidia driver, not Chrome. Just get the latest drivers for whatever gpu you have, and it'll either work... or you don't have the supported hardware, and nothing can make it work.
