Learner needs help to cut large file

Recently i asked how to sync audio/video and was helped by Manono on this forum. Since then , i have gained another problem! I am a rock climber in my spare time and recently a friend and I filmed a long climb in North Wales U.K. This shows as being over 17Gb in one file. Have tried Avidemux to split and then tried to convert back to edit but without joy. Any suggestions what software i should try. I will experiment to learn but have no idea where to head. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards.

It would help to know the specifics of the file (Video and audio codecs).
