Other alternative are network media players as Mede8er (http://www.mede8er.com/mede8er_product_med600x3d.htm) can stream 3D isos from network shared folder.

Or recently LAV filers (https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases) is beginning to support MVC decoding but requires compatible player that also support 3D Blu-Ray (probably MPC-HC developer/nightly builds but I don't known current state).
Wow! That's a start! I was thinking about something like Plex that can easily manage all my media, but this is a helpful start!

I have been ripping my 3D BR's into a TAB format and play them via Plex on my Toshiba 3D TV, but that is not *FULL* 3D resolution from what I understand. Although, I do usually rip my disks to ISO as well, I'm not looking to get the full disk. I would like to find a way to rip just the main movie, but not lose any of the original quality.....but still play it like any other movie in my collection. Just pick the movie and hit play.

In the past I have done this sort of by using PowerDVD within Windows MCE even in Windows7. However, it was kind of wonky. What it basically did was put a PowerDVD menu item into WinMCE. I would have to mount the ISO prior to doing that then PowerDVD would play it as a physical BR. Not very automated and the interface didn't match the rest of WinMCE very well. Buggy as well.

I was hoping that in the couple years since I last did this, technology had caught up!

EDIT: in a quick Amazon search I found this which lists a bunch that claim to play 3D:

I use Plex for all of my side-by-side 3D content and it works beautifully. I need to switch my TV to 3D mode manually, but otherwise it looks gorgeous.

I use TAB mostly. I'm not sure if there is any functional difference. It just looks more symmetrical in my mind so I stick with it. lol

It does also look pretty good, but I understand it's NOT actually full resolution. It kind of muxes two, half-resolution frames together to make the 3D effect.

Know anything about that?

SBS Is better than TAB. It's a simple comparison - let's take full-HD material, which is 1920x1080.

If you go TAB, you're sacrificing vertical resolution. It will be halved to 540 pixels.

If you go SBS, you're sacrificing horizontal resolution. It will be halved to 960 pixels. But you keep the full vertical resolution of 1080 pixels!

With SBS, you're sacrificing less of the image. Especially so when the video is widescreen with bars above and under the video.

Wildfire beat me to it. The pixel count is the same regardless of which one you choose, but things like stair-stepping on slanted surfaces will be practically unnoticeable with SBS whereas it will stand out a lot more with TAB, especially when watching it on a really big screen.

Yup. That's why I always encode to SBS instead of TAB. Always go for the best quality possible!

I have, by the way, never understood why TAB even exists. There's just no need for it, or am I missing something? :?

That being said, I DO in fact have a passive 3D TV. It is a 2012 vintage Toshiba. Are you saying that I am better off with the TAB format from a quality standpoint?

Really? I have used PowerDVD (not sure of version, but not new) to play 3D ISO's through a decade old laptop with Windows7 on it via HDMI. I am not an expert in this and I'm not going to say it was a pleasant experience, but I did this via WinMCE with the PowerDVD add-in. It was a clunky solution to begin with, but the WinMCE going away and PowerDVD not being used for anything useful EXCEPT for playing 3D, that's not a real solution, IMO. It's just one more step for a comprehensive home theater experience.

Do you know of ANY HTPC package (Plex/Kodi etc) that is looking to integrate this? Do you know of any forums that talk more about MVC software playing in general? I have Googled, but........Google.....

Thanks as always for the awesome insight!

Sure?

From Wikipedia:

HDMI 1.4 was released on May 28, 2009, and the first HDMI 1.4 products were available in the second half of 2009.[70][101] HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 4096×2160 at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters) or 3840×2160 (Ultra HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz; adds an HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), which allows for a 100 Mbit/s Ethernet connection between the two HDMI connected devices so they can share an Internet connection;[46] and introduces an audio return channel (ARC),[45] 3D Over HDMI,....

Yes, H-TAB is better for passive 3D TV's while H-SBS is better for active 3D TV's.

What I recall was a wonky solution that would sometimes play in varying levels of 3D and sometimes not at all. I remember scouring forums back then trying to figure out of maybe my video drivers weren't the "proper" ones. In the end I did have the "best" drivers and never found a real solution. It could simply be that what I was trying to do wasn't meant to work, though

Feature request for VR/Cardboard use

Okay, so here's a question for you and with VR and Google Cardboard becoming popular, this might be a cool feature to add.

I have instructions on my blog for people to use BDtoAVCHD as a part of converting 3D Blu-ray to something that can be viewed on Google Cardboard. Yes, it's more of a just-for-fun thing than being really practical, but it's definitely an alternative way to watch a 3D movie (or any movie really) in private without bothering anyone else or using up the family TV.

The problem is that in order to keep a full peripheral view, VR headsets use a lot of "overscan", which focuses primarily on the center area of the screen for each eye. That means that for movies a lot of the outside screen areas are out of sight. Is there a way to integrate a 3D function to reduce the left and right eye views separately to allow more of the screen? The results would be something like this:

instead of the regular one:

I've been trying to figure out a similar way by running the SBS file through ffmpeg or something along those lines, but I've had no luck thus far. It would be great to have this option available in BDtoAVCHD if possible.

This seems more a matter of rendering (player time) that file format/encoding.

Have you ever thought Stereoscopic Player?

That a Windows player, though. I'm talking about encoding it in a way that the .mkv/.mp4 file can be moved over to Android or Apple devices as well, especially with Google Cardboard gaining more popularity and more devices like View Master's new 3D unit being advertised. Portable 3D files for VR/Cardboard would be great to have. And think about parents -- download and make a Google Cardboard unit, get an old phone, slap it in, keep the kids quiet on long trips with their own 3D movies.

@pistacho: I have ripped the movie Saw (region ABC) and tried to convert it to x265 .mkv file but it fails at some point, not sure where the log files are kept.

But if I use another program to do the same it converts it with no errors.

Have you or anyone that came across this issue have a solution for this?

Thanks in advance

cgp

EDIT: It seems to be doing it to every movie I rip, I have installed and uninstalled BDtoAVCHD a few times but still the same issue. Even with v2.5.4 which was fine before updating to version 2.5.5.
EDIT 2: OK, it seems that BDtoAVCHD has problems trying to convert Blu-ray's with mpeg video to x265 but it has no problems with converting them to x264.

cgp-2k9:

I tested mpeg Blu-Ray to x265 MKV conversion and has finished without errors. Can you paste error_log and x265 encode log?

Also: the error occurs with only one source or you are tested various sources with same error?

Logs are on temp folder (default at C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Local\Temp\BDtoAVCHD). Exact path is indicated on menu Options > Settings.
