Resolution and bitrate
Hello,
I have two versions of a video, I would like to just keep the best one. Mediainfo gives me the results below : 1): 1280*720 (16/9) at 23,976 im/sec, bitrate : 4347 kb/s 2): 1920*1080 (16/9) at 23,976 im/sec, bitrate : 2600 kb/s This looks a bit strange to have the highest bitrate with the lowest resolution ?? Anyway if 2600kb/s is enough for 1920*1080, why trying to go higher ? Thanks for helping |

It is not at all a given that 2600kb/s is "enough" for 1080p. In fact, it almost certainly isn't, unless your video is a slideshow. If you buy a Blu-Ray with a 1080p video on it, it'll most likely have a bitrate between 20000 kb/s - 40000 kbps, and even that is still not lossless (though very nearly so) and can be too little in a handful of scenes. I worked on some very complex 480p videos that required an average bitrate of 25000 kbps just to keep compression artifacts from appearing.
In some situations the low bitrate 1080p video might look nicer, for example in animation (especially anime). If it's a movie with lots of action, I would wager a guess that the 720p stream will look better. But even beyond the bitrate and resolution, there are other things to consider - what was the quality of the source? Was it encoded with average quality (constant rate factor) or average bitrate? If whoever made the file used an average bitrate setting, did they do 2-pass encoding, or not? What codec is used in both cases? Ultimately, there's just too many variables to consider, so your best option is to just look at both of them and decide which one looks subjectively nicer. |

The 1920x1080 video with a bitrate of 2600 kbps will look worse. |
