That is right.

But

that is wrong.

I cannot see any subtitles flagged as forced.

Only MakeMkv indicates there are forced subtitles when it is to merge an .mkv file out of .m2ts streams.

I can watch them only when they are merged in an .mkv container. They are not displayed when they are in the Blu-ray stream.

But,
eac3to can extract a .sup file from the .mkv container and this .sup file contains the forced subtitles only, although the .mkv has been merged with the the .sup file extracted from the .m2ts streams.

And this eac3to .sup file can be muxed/demuxed, using tsMuxeR and the forced subtitles displayed from the tsMuxeR generated .ts/.m2ts files.

The same .sup file cannot be process by BDsup2sub nor by Subtitle Edit.

p.s. When I'm talking forced subtitles it means subtitles that behave as forced.
I haven't seen them in any subtitles editing or ripping software. I have watched them when displayed by a player and they behave just as forced.

These subtitles are burned in...
Open 00506.m2ts in your preferred player, around minute 14.

Gah! I just tested my rip and I don't have any subtitles there. Let me dig up the original disc and I'll get back to you.

It's not wrong. It simply means there are no items flagged as forced, similar to #3 of my initial post.

This is wrong. MakeMKV does not indicate anything, it simply offers you to extract only forced subs from ANY sub stream whether they have forced subs or not. You can only find that out after ripping the tracks and not upon load.

Thank you very much for answering me.
And I'm sorry I made mistake. The subtitles I thought were forced turned out to be embedded into the video stream.

I just checked the original (US retail BD) disc and there are no subtitles there. Even if I turn on the English subtitles there is no translation of his German.

Thanks for the wild goose chase.

There are subtitles burnt-in elsewhere in the movie, but none on the German shouting at 0:51:30.

I've been playing around with subtitles for a while now and trying to figure out the best way to deal with them. What are peoples thoughts about using handbrake and encoding at CQ18 and burning them directly into the video. Is there any downside? I say CQ18, but does anyone else have a value they think better to use? Only way to burn or hardcode is to re-write the video, yes?

Thanks

Yes, and since this thread is about problems ripping the video you should take your encoding quality question to the Handbrake forums.
