Weird WMV playback

Even though my computer is not the fastest in the world, 1920x1080 HD WMV videos play perfectly smooth (I have a 1280x800 screen). The weird thing is it's like that only with Windows Media Player. When I try to play these files in some other player the playback is not smooth at all, and other players are basically unusable when it comes to HD wmv files.

What do I do for my files to be played smoothly in any player? No ffdshow-tryouts setting seemed to help.

And one more thing: Windows Media Player takes a very, very long time to start playing a wmv video, regardless of its quality.

DXVA is in use. You can get the same effect with any DXVA-enabled player, as long as they're set up to play it. The latest ffdshow versions have DXVA decoders, but the player has to support it.
