Mp4 Wrapper/mux (megui/mp4box) SLOW Playback in Sony Vegas Studio 9
Hey Guys!
Been reading a lot on the boards about x264 as I am trying to find a good backup/high quality HD master solution. We're currently running off ProRes, but the files are 40GB for 20 mins and it's a hassle to work with. I was going to use HDV but then did some research and thought I'd go the route of H.264 and keep a really high quality save. The second reason is we are most likely going to go the AVC route and get some AVC cameras, so finding a good avc/h264 solution is needed at this point. SO... after much testing using Sony's AVC that crashes, mainconcept's avc that looks bad... I figured I'd frameserve from vegas to megui and get x264 to do the job. Problem is, if I export the mp4 video alone (codec avc1) and the audio as mp3, I can put these two back in vegas no problem and get a perfect 29.97 Playback at full quality. But when I use megui to mux audio/video into a single file, then that's where I run into problem. The resulting file looks better visually (gamma increase/lighter/more contrast/more vibrant in vegas [which makes me think different vegas decoder used]) which is good, but the playback falls down to 8-12FPS only. I tried with a default encode, I tried using YAMB instead of megui... but to no avail, it is slow as hell. I tried on 3 different boxes with vegas 9, same result. Do you guys have any idea how this could be fixed? any way to maybe change the codec displayed by mp4box when muxing so it makes vegas think it's the same file type as the other? a different way to mux it? ------------ On a second note, Is there any preset around, or settings you guys could suggest, for my 1080-60i exports for a master backup? right now I took the Blu Ray profile, and changed the bitrate to 25mbps... but any tips, ideas... custom matrices or anything I should look into? |

Ok, I have some more info.
the export from megui's video file before muxing is decoded by vegas with the following info : non-muxed mp4: ------------------------------------------------------------- Name: testing.mp4 Folder: V: Type: MainConcept AVC/AAC Size: 14.81 MB (15,161,176 bytes) Created: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 10:57:39 AM Modified: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 10:59:32 AM Accessed: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 11:02:23 AM Attributes: Archive Streams Video: 00:00:05.005, 29.970 fps progressive, 1920x1080x32, AVC Plug-In Name: mcmp4plug.dll Folder: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 9.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mcmp4plug Format: MainConcept AVC/AAC Version: Version 1.0 (Build 3100) Company: Sony Creative Software Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------- muxed mp4: ------------------------------------------------------------- General Name: testing-yamb.mp4 Folder: V: Type: QuickTime Size: 14.81 MB (15,161,325 bytes) Created: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 11:03:23 AM Modified: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 11:03:24 AM Accessed: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 11:03:24 AM Attributes: Archive Streams Video: 00:00:05.005, 29.970 fps, 1920x1080x24, H.264 Summary Software: Yamb 2.1.0.0 [http://yamb.unite-video.com] Plug-In Name: qt7plug.dll Folder: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 9.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\qt7plug Format: QuickTime 7 Version: Version 1.0 (Build 5611) Company: Sony Creative Software Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------- So, it looks like Vegas is using a quicktime plugin to decode the file, but quicktime is BAD at decoding this... Is there any way I can mux the files, but keep it as an "AVC" filetype so that vegas picks it up with the mainconcept decoder instead? or is there any other solutions? |
