CoreCodec/H.264 Codec "CoreAVC"

I've been using CoreAVC for the longest time so what's a good h264 decoder on the market now?

There's no "best", but IMHO, LAV Video is a very good and stable H.264 DirectShow decoder, which is based on libavcodec. In software mode, its performance can be compared to CoreAVC, even outperform with high bit-depth H.264. It also support hardware-accelerated decoders, include CUVID, DXVA (native and copy-back), QuickSync. And it's free and open-source.

EDIT: I just answered the above question, didn't intend to troll or anything. As CoreCodec has abandoned their product, I think people deserve to know other alternatives if they want.

Thanks for the reply, wow I didn't know forums had rules such as "don't ask what's best", now that is weird.

CoreAVC was the best decoder during it's time, it's too bad they stopped development because I could run 1080p video on my old Pentium 4 system whereas libavcodec would cripple the system.

Not that any of that matters now on my current rig, but just curious if anything new came out to replace CoreAVC during this time.

On the DShow side, I continue to use COREAVC (even though LAV may be faster) because, historically it has had slightly better corruption handling (corrupted DCT coefficients instead of large black blocks, iirc). It's not so important for playback, but for encoding, the errors will be permanantly embedded in the video.

Until last year, I was using the H.264 decoder from DivX. I switched to LAV Video when I found that

1) there are some clips which the DivX filter failed to decompress properly, and

2) the H.264 decoder from ffmpeg/libav finally became as fast as the payware H.264 decompressors

He worked with x264 for a short time after CC disbanded (never a public announcement, but it was quickly obvious), and now he's a business consultant in Florida. I wonder if he's the one who keeps the website and hosting up for old times' sake.

BetaBoy will not return to Doom9, so probably it is time to finally lock this thread.

P.S.: besides, "nobody" uses CoreAVC anymore.
