Well, I don't see a reason why user would like to have no audio. if you like OGG and hence OGM then just wait for full support. Having an application which just produces something unfinished so that you finish it manually is beyond the scope of the GKIF4U. In fact it's GK in it's current form that can do that

It was just an idea to use this tool to produce a ogm file. I could take my ogg soundtrack file size, + external subtitle file size. Take those sizes away from 700Mb and use the 'custom size' option in GKIF4U. Mux the whole lot together into a ogm for a nice 1 CD rip. I currently use GK but this just looks a whole lot easier.

I see your point about GKIF4U not producing unfinished movies so i'll be waiting........Any ideas about which version will introduce ogm/ogg ?

Thaks, @len0x.

Perhaps it is beyond the current project objectives, but as quality is your main concern, you might want to support 1:1 encodes (keeping the original PAR).

This is very useful for anamorphic movies since it keeps absolutely all detail from the source, ideal for true archive quality backups.

Then, when you support matroska, you may introduce the correct width in the AVI properties and the player, via fddshow, does the final resizing.

I have done some tests (DivX-encoded LOTR with Quant=3, output size turned out to be 1.5-GB) and the quality is superb.

[Add:] By doing 1:1 encode you save the resizer step, you just crop the mattes.

version 0.2 is out

Just put an update on the web. Look in the first post for download link and history.

About new resizing algorythm: as manono suggested after I reach 608 width for widescreen movies or 512 for 4:3 movies I use sharp bicubic resize instead of lanczos and comp test limit is getting down to 60% instead of 70%.

Great work as usual, I will closely follow the development of yet another excellent program, but I am concerned about one thing though, and that is that this one will take up all your time leaving you with no time for the further development of Gknot....

You have to press the button real hard. Use a hammer on it. It costs a mouse per movie, but it's really worth it.

Just kidding. That was with Dr.DivX. . Sorry for the confusion.

Just testing it with Indiana Jones I. Looks great!

Comments so far:

I noticed that doing a Start after Preview redoes the DVD2AVI. Is this really needed?
ITU is not checked by default. Did you change you mind on the subject?
Why the name "transcoding" in the window title?
I understand your concern (you're not only one who wonders about it). I can guarantee that 0.29 version of GK will be eventually done. After that we'll see - I have a dream of having a pro version of GKIF4U which will have most of necessary functionality of current GK...

please update to version 0.21

I found annoying bug which could prevent proper resizing below width of 608... fixed in 0.21 which is up already

a) you need to demux the audio anyway (preview does't generate audio), so there is no harm in indexing again. (demuxing is more expensive process anyway)

b) there is no more ITU if you read the label now it's "keep perfect 4:3 ratio" which means "don't follow ITU standard", which is basically reverse of GK check box.

c) good question - I think it's official name of the process

Well one should follow ones dreams..

Does this mean that in fact at some point in the future GKIF4U will actually replace Gknot?

Ah, you tricked me. The history says "renamed" not "transformed".

Perhaps you might want to rephrase it, "Keep perfect aspect 4:3 ratio" may lead users to think it's a good thing.

Well, you seem to be loose with the meaning of certain words.

Hi Len0x, I'm trying to replicate it now, but I can't. Yesterday, when I had that problem, I selected "Deinterlace source" 'cause my vob, althought DVD2AVI doesn't detect it as interlaced, has the typical interlacing artifacts.
So I have just deselected "deinterlace source", start my tests and everything seems to be OK. These has been the logs:

(15 megs in custom size)

[03/11/2003 21.58.19] Started encoding.
[03/11/2003 21.58.19] Demuxing and indexing.
[03/11/2003 21.58.29] Encoding audio.
[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Found 5964 frames
[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Audio size: 2731280
[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Overhead: 238592
[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Video Size: 12758768
[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Running compressability test.
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] Compressability percentage is: 60.56
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] New width is : 576
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] Predicted comptest value is: 73.51
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] Running first pass.

Then I select 10 megs:

[03/11/2003 22.02.35] Started encoding.
[03/11/2003 22.02.35] Demuxing and indexing.
[03/11/2003 22.02.44] Encoding audio.
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Found 5964 frames
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Audio size: 2731280
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Overhead: 238592
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Video Size: 7515888
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Running compressability test.
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Compressability percentage is: 35.67
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] New width is : 448
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Predicted comptest value is: 74.24
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Running first pass.

Then I've tried to select "Deinterlace source" and start again a 15 megs, but now the video size remain 7515888. So I think there's something wrong anywhere, something not reset to default, don't really know. The fact that yesterday CT gave me a 640 horizontal resolution (it was first with a 17 megs custom size) proves that I'm not crazy or drunk! Note that I always delete the content of the tmp directory before re-starting.

May I also suggest to automatically delete the content of this tmp directory? One time I try to encode my 150 vob AFTER trying to encode a full film. Well, the ac3 encoded to mp3 was the one from the film, not from the small vob!

I hope this prog will grow fast and better, I really like the philosophy behind it. And since I have only a PIII@500, I'd like to be allowed to use also Divx5

Bye, Yotsuya.

Edit: tried 0.21 and the first try was really funny! Selecting Custom size of 15 megs, it gave me a video size of 1465507384, so the comp test was 4568 and the horizontal resolution 704. I restart GKIF4U, tried again, and now works OK. Don't really understand what's wrong with me...
Another small suggestion...you could also allow to limit the maximum horizontal res to 640, 704 gives some problems to old pcs like mine.

lenOx: It's a tricky business - I can select title with highest playback from IFO, but I still need a mean of doing that second step, i.e. actually ripping that chain out of whole vobset. And this is DVD rippers business (and those tools contain DeCSS code), which is a no go at the moment... Although if someone can point me to the ripper which doesn't contain DeCSS code and will not work on DVDs, but only on decrypted material already, then I can have a look at it...
i always use dvddecrypter to make 1:1 images of the dvd to hdd, with css key already cracked.. so therefore it should be no problem for you?

remember the testdvd i did as first example?
this one was already ripped to hdd, and mounted with daemon tools as a virtual dvd drive, but it should be no prob for gkif4u to select the biggest vob set?

maybe for us season freaks (coz that would be simple to implement if biggest ifo is implemented):
an option to encode all episodes from one dvd in one batch run...
maybe automatically selected big vob sets (lets say , the user could specify everything above 40 minutes of playtime), i think that could be implemented with a simple loop construction, if you are able to get the playtime of every vob set from the dvd ifo structure...
that feature combined with batching up 7 dvd´s in 7 virtual dvd drives und running gkif4u would be the greatest thing ever invented

when selecting 1/2 cd, then selecting custom size (344 mb in my case): video size=1400 mb...

now trying to input 344, click one mb up and one down again
edit: works!

RE the legal issue w/ burning/ripping, I don't understand how that wouldn't be legal

the burning is 100% legal - nero, clonecd, blindwrite, alcohol 120% etc prove as much

as for ripping - aren't there any legal progs out there that rip and could serve as a precedent ?

and I mean, I thought making a copy of something you legally own is legal

I think all you have to do is put a little warning like clonecd "please don't use this software to make illegal copies of copyrighted material"

of course im not exactly knowledgable in the law subject so i could very well be wrong on both accounts

Any chance for job queue?

I just tried it on a few BtVS episodes and and it worked like a breeze, except for that I had to go back every few hours to load new VOBs...

Anyway - excellent software (made long time lurker finally speak up in this forum Best regards to everyone ).
