I'll try to release the next beta by next week. There are some weird problems with the timeline that I have to fix.

2 video timelines is a good idea. I'll have to think about it.

@chris

this project is not open source. At least not yet. I'll release the source code when I stop working on this project.

I would recommend that you add transparency and crossfades in the same way that Sony Vegas does it. You could add transitions in the same way, by letting people drag and drop them onto an area that has a crossfade applied. I that sony vegas does it both the fastest and most intuitive way of any NLE out there. They have a trial version available if you need to see how it works.

Better still would be a (virtually) unlimited number of tracks, ie as many as the user chooses to add.

Can I just say a big Well Done for starting a free/open NLE for Windows, as there's nothing else out there apart from Windows Movie Maker, and the free version of VideoPad. Everything else is either payware or horribly complicated / lacking features / unstable.

I've been driven to play with Linux, it's that bad! (see http://www.openshotvideo.com/ for an example of a one man coding effort - he seems to be doing very well)
... so a good Windows video editor should make you a very popular coder!

Thanks

v1.1 Notes

Timeline

* The blue line shows the mouse position. The red line shows the current playback position.
* The playback position can be changed by clicking anywhere on the scale.
* To change the resolution of the scale click anywhere on the scale and drag the mouse left or right
* Clips can be positioned by dragging with the mouse or by doing cut/copy and paste. Don't try to drag a clip over-and-beyond another clip. Use cut/paste instead.
* Empty spaces in the video timeline is padded with blank video.
* Empty spaces in the audio timeline is padded with silence.

Video filters

* Filters can be applied to a single clip on the timeline, or on the imported media. Simply right click on the item and select "Video filters".
* If a filter is applied on an imported media, then it will affect all clips derived from it. This can be very useful in some situations. For example, an imported video may be grainy. You can apply a degrain filter on that source, and the effect will be seen on all clips derived from it.
* The filters can be arranged by selecting one or more items from the list and dragging them up or down
* To use the same filter more than once, you have to create a copy of the filter. Select one or more filters, hold down the Control key and drag them up or down.
* Each video filter is defined using an XML file stored in the filters folder.
* You can create a filter definition yourself using the in-built editor (in "Options" menu).
* When you click the 'Toggle Filters' button on the video filters window it may seem like there is no change. That doesn't mean that the filter is not working or that there's a bug in the program! The effect produced by some filters is too small to be noticeable. Look carefully, or increase the strength of the filter!

Known issues

* There are a lot of problems with 64-bit windows. This program has been tested on 32-bit Vista and 32-bit XP only.
* The clips cannot overlap. So don't try to make the clips overlap by dragging them. You may succeed in doing so due to bugs and it will cause problems.
* The video filters window has a slider for seeking to different positions in the video. Dragging it very quickly can cause the video to freeze. Reload the video to fix the problem.
* If the imported avisynth script is bad (returns an error) then the thumbnail generation will fail

If this program makes your life any easier, please consider donating $2 for its development. You don't need a PayPal account to donate. You can use a credit card or e-check through PayPal without having to open a PayPal account. If you are a computer professional earning money from the use of this software, then it would be nice if you could donate more.

I love programming. I could do this for free all my life
However if people are willing to donate then it will help me give more time to this project.

@ MJ Peg

My main focus right now is to implement basic features that one would expect from a video editor. After that I'll focus on the eye candy. Those screenshots look awesome. I'm not sure I can come up with something as good as that. I'll see what I can do
