If I'm not mistaken, the benchmark has been updated to v3?
If it has, then I don't see any speed improvements on my dual-core, the results are almost identical to the previous ones (less than 0.1fps improvement!).

What I miss is actually a benchmark that transcodes from 1080p (1920x816) very high bitrate AVC (18Mbit/s+) to 720p (1280x544) using x264. This is much more likely to happen when ripping a BD than transcoding 720p MPEG-2 to AVC!!

An ad for the latest Mac Pro caught my eye (dual Xeon 8 cores) and I've wondered about getting one for fun (and running Windows on it), but I'm surprised it doesn't appear to be any better than a single CPU box? Am I wrong, misreading results somehow?

q9550 @ 3.9 on a chilled water loop and sitting in a chilled case.
Internal case temps = 10f/-12c to 16f/-8c Water temps are the same as the internal case temps

I hit 4.1ghz but it wasn't stable. This old P5B dlx has a flaky northbridge. Maxes at 460-470fsb. Just picked up some ddr2 1066 but at 1x1 divider the board is capped grrrr...

Overall I'm very happy with this chip. It was $239 on newegg a week back, couldn't resist...
Gonna buy a Giga UD3P to hold me over till the I9 comes out wewt!

Here's @ 4.25Ghz with the new"er" motherboard. I found out I got a bad stick of ram, fun fun.
With one stick it can hit 4.5ghz/530FSB but with 2 it's only memtest stable at ddr1000/500FSB uggg.

I hate doing rma's so I just ordered a different kit of Gskil ddr1200. Yes I'm lazy lol...

I7 980x benched

Just picked up a new I7 980x / ASUS P6X58D Premium / G.SKILL 3x 2gb ddr3 2000mhz.

I've only had it for 2 days now so I'm not clocking it massively yet. But the qpi is clocked up a bit to make use of the 2000mhz ram.

Its running at 4.0ghz with stock voltage on a chilled water loop.

Anyway here's the benchmark results using x264 HD BENCHMARK 3.0. I'm not sure if they have a 64 bit version that uses a 64 bit x264.exe. If I get a minute I'll check.

Oh btw this is with hyperthreading off. Several games I play can't deal with 12 threads and I've seen 0 improvement using 12 threads vs 6 while encoding with x264. If it was 12 cores that would be different.

In a few days I'm gonna shoot for 5ghz and see how it goes.
This chip has an extremely low default vid and runs very cool.

Those were load temps. I run a large water loop with the pc mobo/rad ect inside a huge sealed box. The air in the box is chilled - a lot... Middle of winter = -15c idle / -8c to 0c load temps. Summer my temps are far worse as I use a ac unit to chill the air.

I'm currently at 100% cpu usage encoding, temps are 32c-36c loaded at 4.2ghz

heres a 1055T thuban amd chip, the first pass is only pushing 55% total cpu usage tho for some reason?




also had to change the cpuz version to the lastest as it was crashing here with the old one.

I hit 4.1ghz but it wasn't stable. This old P5B dlx has a flaky northbridge. Maxes at 460-470fsb. Just picked up some ddr2 1066 but at 1x1 divider the board is capped grrrr...

how can that be possible?

your post above this one i quoted shows a chip at 3740mhz doing 24.80 fps and then a 3909mhz run doing 32.06 fps?

a 160mhz gave a 7fps increase?

i know a q9550 at 3800mhz here does 25fps, as i have one.

There can be different reasons, but something is definitely wrong with the settings of your RAM:

Memory Frequency 544.0 MHz (1:2)

Channels Dual, (Ganged)

1. ganged equals to NOT interleaved channels (single channel roughly speaking, it is 1*128 bit instead of 2*64 bit mode). Unganged mode is preferred by apps that utilize multiple cores, just like x264 or 7-Zip.
2. the memory is too slow, 544 MHz double data rate is 1088 MHz. The memory controller of Phenom x6 requires AT LEAST 1333 MHz. Loose the timings and bump up the frequency.

3. it is a good idea to overclock the hypertransport of the processor (~ 10%) because it speeds up the L3 memory communication.

It was most likely due to me massively under-volting the cpu.
I deal with pretty cold temps so while the pc often boots up and passes hours of prime its not running optimally.

I've run into this issue while gaming as well. I scratched my head for almost a week before figuring out that while the pc ran fine the chip needed more juice to correctly function.

Very cold temps + overclocking can have some odd results.
Eg, my q9550 will boot at 1.0v on the cpu @ 3.2ghz running @ -15c. And run windows / surf the web fine for days.
Unless I start gaming or encoding I would never notice any difference.

During the summer months it simply won't boot or run at those voltages no matter what I do.

I also ran that q9550 in 3 different boards before settling on the UD3P ver-1.6 with gskill ddr1200 1.8v 5-5-5-15 ram @ ddr 1140ish 1T.
All board are not created equal, the setup above ran extremely well and cost next to nothing.
I've since tossed that rig in a 4U server case, nice rig but the 980x spanks it.

I don't fully remember but I'm also pretty sure the test you're talking about was done with the new ram, the 1st test was done with one really screwed up stick.

Those are pretty nice results you got with the AMD Phenom II X6. Considering the price its a pretty decent chip. I wonder if there's any dual socket boards out for it
