What kind of questions would you like to see in the upcoming Newbies FAQ?

well since askn on this forum and others ive never gotten a solid answer to wot type of hardware a gpu's is best for playn back 720p and 1080p movies witout stutter and being able to do emails or some other stuff at the same time.

like wots the least type of gpu can i use for a laptop,same for desktop.
core duo or core 2 duo,which is better

a list of gpu's for both laptop and desktop would be great.

like right now my desktop has 1gb ram p4 3.oghz and an old nvidia fx5200 128mb card,and its old.i can run 720p fine,but cant run mkv.x.264 1080p files,but can run 1080p wmv-hd fine.
surely newbs would want to know this type of info.maybe they still stuck in the sd era.

There are literally hundreds of so-called guides on this, but none of them is considering the aspect of not wanting to lose audio- and video-quality. Also, most of the guides involve HUGE software-packages for just one task, or scripts. I have yet to see a decent guide for this. Would be great to see one here.

Avidemux can directly edit them. Instant bonus!

You can use ffmpeg to mux to avi and edit in virtualdub, totally lossless, but you must have a recent ffdshow installed and flv decoding enabled for it. There's also no GUI for it, command-line or batch files only. Fortunately it's dirt simple:
ffmpeg -i {input}.flv {output}.avi
In newer builds it'll detect the frame rate and everything for you. (Which surprised me just now, it used to always do 1000 fps.)

Or you can use pretty much any ffmpeg or mencoder frontend to convert it to pretty much any other format in existence, see the GUI forum for plenty of those.

I am using the very latest StaxRip (1.0.0.1) and it has downloaded it's needed versions of everything but nero aac encoder (it wanted feb 2007 - august '07 was dl'ed instead).

I am new to x264/aac encoding into the mkv and mp4 containers and am playing the files using VLC 0.8.6c. Ripper is DVDdecrypter 3.5.4.0 on XP Pro.

Audio sync is a nightmare and is off by a constant interval. Should I search for the older version the AAC encoder, or is there something wrong with using the programs I am using?

The required version is 1.0.7.0 and the releases date is Feb 12, 2007. I am doing an encode from scratch on a movie that has displayed the sync prob and will update this post when I have checked it out.

Many problems seem so obvious after you find them. The problem was that I did not change the default DVDDecrypter processing mode from 'File' to 'IFO' and was at the mercy of circumstance. I was trying to get my process up and running on four machines and thought that individual environments were involved.

Seriously, cover the result of this other topic of EVO files to WMV HD conversion after it is figured out. What I don't like about this forum in particular that should change is that people should post updates in the first post in an easy to understand manner dated with credits. Especially these 15 page topics you know no one is going to read every 15 pages because their attention span is 10 seconds before they post the same question asked 128 times already.

Kind of DVD-RB specific, but may apply somewhat to a FAQ here: There is *no* discussion in DVD-RB FAQ (unless I've managed to miss it) of the various modes. I know it's a complex subject, but surely each merits a couple of sentences and a pointer to some on-line resource (or, here, thread). E.g.:

"XYZ Mode - Mode that {uses the XYZ program or whatever}. It's particularly good at blah blah, but downside is blah blah.. See [linkie] for more information."

I would like an detailed explanation of what happens when a variable (or combination of variables) within a filter is set to either extreme. Every single tutorial or FAQ out there just explains in vague terms what it does, like "function Q of MY filter makes THIS do THAT, you can set it from 0 to 99". And im always left asking, well, what the hell happens if i set it to 99? No wait, let me spend the next hour finding out. Oh, whats that, you have 5 more settings to change, and the combination of any of them could produce a drastically different result than any of them by themselves? Well, let see, 6 settings , so thats 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15 hours for combinations of two! I wonder what 3 or more of these settings do, i think retirement is coming up soon, maybe i can finally find out!

Its not really a FAQ in and of itself, its more of a way of creating FAQ's that actually create a greater sense of understanding instead of just blindly leading people towards a specific goal.

well

make a new project in vegas ( you didn't say the resolution ) 1920x1080

take the first material at 960x540 and add a border up 960 pixels

take the second 960x540 material and add a border down 960 pixels

put the footage on top of each other and you will have a 1920x1080 split screen material

weird i know

if your footage is 1920x1080 than project 3840x2160 and add border 1920 each

Read the docs. StackHorizontal and StackVertical are what you should look at and Interleave might also be of interest.

A dictionary wouldn't help you much. You need to do some serious research and learning. I'm sorry to say there is no shortcut. But the journey can be quite enjoyable.

Anyway, Google is a giant dictionary and you should be able to find out what you need with it. If not, post a question in the Newbies forum.

If there was something like this that allows us noobs to make sence of the tower or babel of codecs & programs most of us could be brought up to speed very quickly.

i've had quite a bit of success converting with the open source software mediacoder. pretty intuitive to work out and operate. simply set source, output file and destination, tweak output settings depending on file format, and go.
