PNG Lossless standard update to support HDR and animations
PNG is great. It's the image format I've been using my whole life. It's supported everywhere, it's lossless, you can use it for everything, from normal natural pictures to screenshots, it supports the alpha channel (transparency layer) and it's generally smaller TIFF. Unfortunately, however, with the evolution in the technology and with more and more devices being capable to record more than 6 stops (100 nits), especially with static pictures in which you can use bracketing, more and more independent implementations were beginning to come up to support SDR and HDR interoperability in PNG (including one from Google). This update to the standard to officially support it in a unified way will hopefully finally standardize the whole thing. The parties involved make up a big chunk of the market as well so hopefully it will get widespread adoption pretty soon with Google leading the implementation alongside Adobe, the BBC and Comcast (which I'm actually glad to see there). I've personally used PNG lossless for pretty much everything my whole life so this definitely welcome. The other part of the update to the standard is about APNG so that hopefully the world will soon forget about posterization and other awful compromises we still have to make to generate new GIF and will once and for all move to animated PNG.
