Should I start encoding with AV1?
Hi, I wonder, should I start encoding with AV1, rather than H.265?
I read that AV1 compresses much better than H.265 and now it also supports HDR. Which AV1-encoder should I use for archiving video? AOM-AV1 or SVT-AV1? I hear that AOM-AV1 gives better video-quality than the faster SVT-AV1. |

AV1 is pretty good but you might have issues if your goal is very high quality. The rate control isn't quite there yet, so complex content or high motion might have some artifacts or detail loss.
I'd recommend SVT-AV1 over AOM. You can also try rav1e.

I read that rav1e isn't so good quality compared to other AV1 encoders, so I'll rather go for SVT-AV1 then. EDIT: Oh, both SVT-AV1 & rav1e are worse compared to x265 according to MSU-tests, https://www.streamingmedia.com/Artic...ticleID=147394 Last edited by Forteen88; 27th July 2022 at 00:02. |
