How Do I Fix Gradual AVI Sync Problem With VirtualDub?

I have an AVI that gradually loses sync over time. I've tried following the instructions here ( http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=111451 ) using VirtualDub but the problem is that the file size is HUGE when I save it (from 850mb to over 8gb).

I've tried searching everywhere for a solution to this but I can't seem to find anything.

I'm sorry for my ignorance on this matter. Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated. (I'm not married to VirtualDub, any fix will do).
