Brightness histogram shader?

Can anyone suggest a shader to show pixel brightness distribution?

I assume it's possible with a shader, and specifically in MPC-HC.

This is not possible with a shader.

Is there documentation on what shaders exactly MPC-HC implements?

I think this is similar to what I'm looking for, at least the stats collection part, but it's supposedly a compute shader:

It supports HLSL pixel shaders, with one sampler (input image) and few input register/variables (image/pitch size and pixel coordinates) that outputs one image pixel.
