SSA processing with DirectShow

I've a project under consideration which involves the creation of video files from SSA (substation alpha) files and audio.

The other conversions I've written for this client use DirectShow and that would be my preference.

However I'm not at all clear on how I would build a graph with DirectVobSub or xy-vsfilter in in order to render the SSA file.

Can anyone offer guidance here or suggest another program (or library) which could do the job?
