What ripping method is best for this?
I have read the guides already and done some searching, but I am still a bit confused about what to do here. I want to back up some episodic DVDs to my HD and encode each episode to a DivX file using Gordian Knot.
I wa told to rip the DVD in IFO mode but I only get a few files that toal about 2 GB on a 7GB DVD. How would be the best way to rip a DVD so I can run it through GK and get seperate DivX files? Should I rip it in IFO mode with every box checked (assuming I want every episode) of should I run it in file mode? I dont care if I get one DivX file containing all the disks contents. I can always split it up with VDub if I have too, but I'm confused as to where exactly to start. Please help me. I am not a noob to vide editing, but I have never tried going DVD ti DivX, only DVD to DVD.

Your signature also violates rule 15. Please edit it to remove the violation. Thank you. Last edited by Guest; 7th February 2006 at 04:42. |

This is also a cross-post (breaking rule 8) of this thread which would have been a better place to ask a follow-up question.
Load the disk and open DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, right-click within the right pane and select "Expand all." In most cases you'll see several PGC's with the time per track which should match the episodes on the disk. Select and decrypt each one into its own folder. |

Dude WTF. I can't make one post here in the last week without getting bitched at? I didnt really ask what's best. I KNOW I am going to use DVD Decrypter. Maybe the word best came out in there, but I just want some help here.
Besides, there has to be some kind of rule against all the annoying flaming you guys have done to me on every post I put up recently. Cmon man, this is ridiculous. If this is the treatment I can expect to keep getting here then why would I even care if you suspend me? EDIT - I do appologize however. I should not have worded the thread title that way, it sort of sticks out alot more that way. I know I can change it, but I dont know how ATM. If an admin will do it I would not mind.

There's no need to complain when you're just being told about the rules... they are here for a reason. Quite often, posts that ask for what's best have content that show the poster didn't really approach his problem properly and methodically and thus got confused.
When describing a problem, you should chose a methodical approach. Start with what you're trying to achieve (back up episodic discs.. but to what? do you want to process each episode separately or do you want to process them all at once?) Then continue with what you already know (what guides you have read (urls do help a lot ), what you have already achieved in the past) Then go on describing on how, given your current knowledge, you'd approach the problem. (I would start up DVD Decrypter, and click here and there and there, then run dgindex, etc.) If your current procedure achieves your goals but you think you are doing something that is too complex, point out your suspicions. E.g. I'm ripping each episode separately and process separately but since I can cut in VirtualDub, couldn't I somehow process the 4-6 (or whatever the number is) of episodes on a disc as one? Also point out why you have these suspicions if you can (for instance.. when I make a DVD to DVD-5 backup with DVD Shrink, I don't have to separate the episodes). With this methodic approach, while you write down all the points, a lightbulb might suddenly go off in your head, you get an idea of what you could try, or you stumble across the solution you've been looking for in the first place. I have found that when describing complex technical problems in forums or mailing lists, that when doing what I described above, every so often I suddenly find the solution and can scrap my post (I'd say that happens in about 1/3rd of all cases, perhaps upwards to 40%). And if I still post, those that read it will know exactly what I am trying to do and will be able to better help you.

No wonder the forums at Afterdawn are so much more active than here. I fail to see where the "best" thing was anywhere close to any kind of violation. Everyone's really anal retentive you all need a stiff drink to mellow you out.

No amount of drinks is ever going to change me prefering quality over volume.

"Active" doesn't necessarily mean better. As Doom9 said, quality over volume. What's the point of a forum that has a TON of posts but takes me forever to find the one that helps me? Doom9 is simply trying to promote a level of quality so that when someone comes here looking for assistence, they can easily find what they're looking for.
As for the whole "best" argument....that's really a personal preference rather than a technical viewpoint. As such you can get into arguments pretty easily over what's considered "best". That's not really the point of this board I don't think. But then again, that's just MY opinion. As for the title of the thread...whatever gets the job done in the least amount of effort and time. |

My point is that his "best" question doesn't really seem to be the same old 'Which DVD burner is best, blah, blah, blah'. His was a technical question that would seem to have an actual, objective answer, which no one has bothered to provide. I'd answer, but I don't know. Maybe someone a little less overzealous about enforcing some archane rule that knows more than myself about DivX encoding can help the guy out. Or better yet, why don't the forum moderators just put an auto-block on any post that contains the word 'best' in it. Come on guys, at least read his post before jumping his a$$.

You know what amazes me? When someone signs up for a forum, *AGREES TO A SET OF RULES(aka Terms of Service Agreement)*, and then complains endlessly when someone corrects them for breaking the rules they agreed to. Let's see, you don't own this forum, Doom9 does. So, if you don't like the rules you agreed to, start your own forum. The respect you should have for the moderators is that they put this board here for our use...and it's an excellent board with extremely knowledgable people. There aren't many of those around. They want to maintain the integrity of the board, and as the owners, they have that right.

I would have answered you sooner, but you have to wait FIVE DAYS TO POST AFTER YOU REGISTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For ripping TV shows from DVD I use smart ripper. The different episodes show up as separate program chains then you can rip them to separate folders and convert the vob files to something else with another program if you want to. |
