Potplayer - ability to start a movie paused?
Hello,
Is there a clever way in Potplayer to start a movie Paused? I need this because it takes at least 10-13 seconds for my projector to switch to HDR and also change aspect ratio (zoom method using lens memories). I would like the movie to stay paused during this and then once the projector is ready, I can hit play to begin. Any suggestions? thanks! |

I go between MPC-BE and Potplayer all the time (both using madVR). I do prefer the stability of MPC-BE. However, there is one nice feature in Potplayer (change subtitle size while playing etc..that I find handy and wish MPC-BE would support that). I'm also still on the old version of Potplayer before they started showing ads...and it's pretty good to me.

In mpv you put pause=yes into the mpv.conf file, after that all files start paused!

I use 1.7.21126 and I just looked through the settings and nothing jumped out at me. It's probably not hard to setup your remote to double click play (thus pausing) when you start a movie. You would just have to train yourself to use the pause when you want to pause an already playing movie... I myself usually just hit play to pause playback...

I use PotPlayer with madVR for video only and it works like a charm. I've got no ads. This: "I still can only recommend to stay away from Potplayer. Many reasons for it." Please explain why. |

Is listed in FFmpeg hall of shame.
Developer(s) copy(s) code from other open source projects without mentioning it. Ads, even if not visible it is tracking user data. If you make a useful bug report or feature request you get ignored, at least many years ago, so I got a small part of MPC-BE Projekt, just try it, you will like the work of its devs. Last edited by Klaus1189; 18th April 2022 at 13:06. |

Thanks for reply, appreciate it!
Aha... hall of shame, didn't know that! That's bad karma, but still, its a good free videoplayer. No ads and no tracking, I just block all connections in firewall. Yeah, true, any bug report is a waste of time, all answers I got so far is, "Reset to default". Also to be fair, most "bugs" I found does fall back to user error (me) tweakings and there is a plethora of settings to get lost in. I also use the very good one and only MPC-HC player, never tried MPC-BE. |

I've never tried this Potplayer thing, so I can't really tell how good or how bad it is.
That said, on the one hand, blocking every unnecessary outgoing/incoming connection is a good idea, in general. On the other hand, doing that is always potentially risky, because for example your firewall might be accidentally down or you might make a mistake, unintentionally allowing connections. Besides, a privacy invading tool tends to stop working eventually, unless you allow remote connections. Then again, many "normal" people are using Google, etc. in a carefree manner, even willingly, so I'd say it's the same difference... For that matter, many people are happily using Windows 10! So, if you like Potplayer and can tame it, why not? It's a free country ![]() |

Router + VPN (Killswitch activated) + ESET Suite (AV+Firewall+HIPS) + Adblocker + Scriptblocker...
If configured wrong, nothing works, no apps, no browsers, no internet, completely safe... haha. If configured right, it's quiet and everything works like a charm. A popup from VPN, ESET and HIPS occasionally and then I can choose to allow or block. Some sites won't work if to many things like ads or scripts are blocked. The most important thing is to have safe and healthy habits when you are online and surfing, do not visit shady websites, have an antivirus/firewall program installed, when you visit software websites and download apps, only use secure softwares when installing. and, this is very important, always always remember that despite all your security measures you may be exposed to attacks in vulnerabilities in your OS. There are "troll factories", evil bots, working day and night... ![]() It's an eternal cat-and-mouse game loop... So stay vigilant, on what you read and what you see on your screen... |

I'm a privacy freak myself, e.g. using doom9 via Tor + Safest + uB. A Tails user... VPN is tricky since you have to trust them (e.g. you wouldn't trust Opera VPN - I don't trust Proton either - I'm not 100% trust Tor either - but I digress).
In prinicple FLOSS like MPC-BE/HC is relatively much better. Then again, there has been an open-source "crap" like FileZilla and (to some extent) Firefox. So everything seems relative, except, maybe, there is a 100% trust-less technology too, like Monero + decentralized exchanges. I think we can't be really free until we start using FLOSS things, e.g. Linux not Windows/Mac. So personally I think we should use open-source apps, even if felt slightly inconvenient. Yet, I must agree that some tools are so necessary even if it's not FLOSS, or it only runs Windows (like MPC)... What a dilemma... |

That is written very clearly in the changelog of the player.
