Well the desktop was specifically designed and built to be compatible with XP, so it's a Geforce 700-series. Does that change anything?

It does.
Anything older than 900 series will have the re-clock enabled. In other words, the GPU will run at its maximum possible speed just fine 'cause at the time NVIDIA wasn't being a *beep* (bad word starting with the letter "d") and didn't require everything to be signed to interact with the firmware.

I have a GTX 950, so no luck for me...
But yeah, the things I said above luckily don't apply to you.

OK cool.

Going back to the subject of virtualization, isn't Virtualbox open-source? Someone should make a fork of it with a halfway decent virtualized GPU. Proper video scaling would also be nice so I'm not playing games in a 640x480 window on a 1600x1200 screen.

It is open source, but it's not a matter of making a fork, it's a matter of writing drivers, so it's even easier.
For instance, take Windows 98SE.
It isn't officially supported by Virtualbox, so there aren't any Guest Addition, therefore, it technically shouldn't even run, but it does 'cause people wrote graphic drivers for it to interface with the default VBoxVGA.
In the same way, someone could just write an open source driver for Windows XP to use VBoxSVGA instead of VBoxVGA and it would work just fine.
Why hasn't anyone done it?
Well, 'cause 90% of users are moaners who don't contribute and the remaining 10% is almost entirely made by Linux devs, so...

I'd love to contribute, but writing a driver is far beyond my skills, so the only thing I do is testing and bug reporting...

Well if we're going to write drivers, then we might as well just write ones that'll allow XP to run on modern bare metal.

I can probably pick up XP laptop for maybe £25.00 or not much more, and takes less space than massive tower case with lotsa drive bays.
Maybe I do dat.

EDIT:
Nope, CEX, Cash Converters, and MorganComputers.co.uk, dont got none
Well I've got 3 broken XP laptops, maybe I fix one of them and chuck the others. [Thinkpad].
EDIT: And there is always the car boot sales, I aint been to one since Wimbledon Stadium car boot closed and
they built a housing estate on it [not the tennis place, dog, and motor cycle racing stuff].

There's still quite a market for XP-compatible hardware. Never chuck anything. Sell it on eBay or craigslist.

Nah, I dont ever bother selling anything, might dump stuff at charity shop though, but laptops broken.

(No idea what craigslist is, please dont tell me )

At a car boot, I once saw a server case (I think, with only mother board and ginormous PSU) that I could easily have climbed inside and shut the door.
(mine was not as big a that)

EDIT: "ginormous", a cross between gigantic, and enormous.

It used to be a site where people would try to find other people to catch STDs from, but 99% of the ads would just be from bots collecting email addresses to sell to spammers. Then FOSTA/SESTA happened and now it's just for finding boring shit like houses and jobs.

Windows 7 End of Support warning in Google Chrome

Since I have no intention to give up Windows 7 any time soon, this warning message ennoys me quite a bit. I found a REG entry in a German forum which disables this message:

Disable Chrome Win7 Warning.reg
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome]
"SuppressUnsupportedOSWarning"=dword:00000001

Cheers

Just stop using Gluegow's Chrome, then problem = solved

Windows 7 is much greater than Chrome.

If you really need or want a Chromium clone, then I recommend Opera or Vivaldi.

Not sure if I understand you correctly, but all I want is to keep using Win7 together with Chrome without getting these annoying messages. I have no need for fancy chromium clones.

Then you shouldn't need Google Chrome as well.
But the registry trick is nice, of course.
Me too uses a similar registry trick to stop an annoying and useless splash message in the olde and goode Adobe Reader 11.

Windows 10 permanently disable Windows Defender Antivirus.

EDIT: Below assumes that you use some other alternative anti-virus software.

"!!! README - BEFORE USE !!!.txt"
Code:
When YOUR antivirus is enabled, M$ Windows Defender antivirus should be disabled.
When you disable YOUR antivirus, then Windows AV will be re-enabled, You may want to disable BOTH.

So, with yours disabled and M$ AV enabled, do as below:

Before using the W10_PermanentlyDisableWindowsDefenderAntivirus.reg,

In Windows 10
  settings/
  Update & Security/
  Windows Security/
  Open Windows Security/
  Virus & threat Protection/
  Manage Settings/

Turn off Real Time Scan, and Anti Tamper Protection. (and click "dismiss" wherever it appears)

It is now TEMPORARILY disabled, but may switch back on after reboot (or an auto update).

So apply the registry edit & REBOOT, is now permanently disabled.

###########################
To undo,

With YOUR AV DISABLED,
apply the W10_ReEnableWindowsDefenderAntivirus.reg

REBOOT

Go to setting/ ... / Windows Security/
where it will likely show "Virus & threat Protection" is OFF, so Turn it ON.

Go into "Manage Settings", and just check that both Realtime Scan and Tamper Protection are both ON.

(I would also prefer to reboot again at that point)

##############################

You can check current status of Windows Defender AntiVirus in PiriForm's "Speccy", 'Operating System' TAB.
https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download
[ Same guys that produce the popular CCleaner software (Crap Cleaner) ]
"W10_PermanentlyDisableWindowsDefenderAntivirus.reg"
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Disable Settings Realtime Antivirus scan, and Tamper protection, then run the registry edit command.

; NEEDS REBOOT AFTERWARDS

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender]
"DisableAntiSpyware"=dword:00000001

"W10_ReEnableWindowsDefenderAntiVirus.reg"
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; NEEDS REBOOT AFTERWARDS, then re-enable Virus & threat Protection.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender]
"DisableAntiSpyware"=-
EDIT: There is also a GPEdit.msc (group policy editor) fix for W10 Pro, but above is perhaps easier and works for home too.
EDIT: I prefer to keep my Firewall and Windows Defender Firewall both active [at least at this minute I do], will maybe switch off later (busy doing loads of new setups).
