Washed out/dull HDR colors

So I'm pretty much going crazy over trying to get HDR playback to work properly. Been at it for hours now reading all kinds of information, but still, pretty much no luck.

So I have a Samsung C27HG70 monitor and a 2070 Super gpu. And I'm using display port, any chance there would be some benefit to using HDMI? Surely/hopefully not?
I'm using MPC-BE, madVR and LAV filters (settings: https://i.imgur.com/12rnrbP.png) (not gonna lie, I have no idea what LAV filters are doing for me, why am I even using them?)
In Nvidia control panel I have set 10bit colors, and also done that in madVR settings and can indeed say 10bit colors (or well, 8bit+frc in my case) seem to be working.
Could definitely notice the dithering disappearing in test images when switching from 8bit to 10bit.

So about my problem, that damn HDR, if set madVR to pass HDR through to the display (along with metadata) my display does blink and switch into HDR, I can see my desktop colors looking absolutely awful, but still, the colors in the video are very washed out/dull.

If I save a screen capture of the current frame by Alt + I, I get those nice colors that I'm after in the image. And also if I screenshot normally I see what actually appears on the monitor for me. Here are the two uploaded to imgur, can pretty clearly see from them what I hope to get, and what I actually get:

What gives?

If I tone map (and output in SDR) I avoid those washed out/dull colors, but the output is not very bright. Screenshot of my tone map settings:

I set the target peak nits to 600 because my display is supposed to have a peak somewhere about there I think? And I don't know why those two settings and unavailable.
Here's an image of the tone mapping in effect:

Looks very dark :/
And also, is tone mapping supposed to be actually be what I want to do? If I tone map, do I still want to download my tv shows/movies in hdr?

If anyone would be able to help me out with either getting the hdr passthrough or tone mapping to work as expected, I'd be forever thankful.
It's really starting to annoy me that the video looks better on my ancient Benq XL2411z.
