I'm just wondering what the best settings are for madvr, from a quality perspective, for use with 2160p (often HDR) material. Using a 3060 Ti + LG CX via HDMI. Scaling algorithms etc? Are they in use for 2160p material on a 2160p display?

Hi Chros, could you be so kind as to update the HDR settings to the latest beta in the screenshot you publish in that link? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have finally got hold of a decent graphics card, and I'm playing around with MadVR, practising on my LG OLED prior to getting my Sony projector. I have done a lot of research and I would just like to confirm something.

I select 'MadVR tone mapping using pixel shaders' I do not have Windows 11 in HDR mode. I also do not tick the box 'send HDR metadata to display'.

I read on a lot of forums that if I did tick this box then the HDR flag will be displayed in the top right corner, which it does. However, the consensus is that this will result in the LG display tonemapping the already tonemapped data that MadVR has processed.

So my question is should I refrain from switching the LG OLED in to HDR mode and let MadVR tonemap the HDR metadata whilst the LG display remains in SDR mode?

The answer depends on whether you want to playback in HDR or not.
If you tone map to low brightness then it's fine to leave it in SDR, otherwise it would be inaccurate.

There are many ways to avoid the TV double tone-mapping, it depends on the model.
Since 2019 you can change the tone map curves to clip instead of rolling off.

Just got RTX 3080 FE as a replacement for my 2060, I noticed flickering is happening a lot. Its like changing refresh rate. My 2060 does this once or twice once you booted the system

Is there a tweak u can suggest to minimize flickering?

I have an issue with stuttering on 4K HDR MKVs with RTX 3080, Marantz SR-6011 and LG OLED65B8. 1080p SDR MKVs are fine. Latest madVR, LAV filters and Nvidia 531.79. Win 10 22H2. Zoom Player and MPC-BE.

Every half a minute or couple of minutes, the picture stumbles / stutters / jumps a few frames. Sound is fine. madVR display info doesn't show any frame drops. The issue is random and and always occurs at different time stamps.

With the same setup and a GTX 980, SDR and HDR were fine. Then I changed to a RTX 2070 Super. At first everything was fine. Then with around Nvidia 512.x and/or a Windows update, SDR and HDR were constantly stuttering. This was solved by:
- Vertical Sync to 'On' for the media player exe.
- In the madVR settings, uncheck 'enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode
- In the madVR settings, how many video frames shall be presented in advance' to 1

Now with the RTX 3080, what else can I try to solve this stuttering with HDR MKVs?

1. Have u tried using DDU first before installing new driver?
2. Try clearing Windows cache with "BleachBit" and the built in Cleaner
3. Use certified HDMI 2.1 Cable
4. Try PotPlayer

Any owners of a g3 and 6900xt here? I am having a problem with hdr... madvr apparently can't switch to hdr mode for some reason after changing my tv; it did with the old one. I am using win11 (HDR off in display settings), mpc-be, lav filters, xysub, and madvr. I tested with MPC video renderer and it switched to HDR as expected.

win 11 and madVR on AMD yeah... the pain it comes back.

you need the newest beta that fixes a bug for the device page it may just think it can't do HDR.

well you are using AMD and to make the AMD HDR API happy you need to make sure that you are sending 10 bit in d3d11 on a fullscreen surface (windowed fullscreen is fine too).

Newest beta drivers you mean? I am running 23.5.2; I had to disable 10bit pixel format (in amd drivers) in order for the windows display settings to detect the HDR capability of the LG, which is weird, because with the sony it worked regardless.
MadVR reports AMD HDR mode, but it cleary doesn't put the TV in HDR mode, except on some random occasions when I move the mouse to the bottom and the player ui appears.

Why not use latest stable for HDR passthrough?

I suppose I could retest, but I switched to the beta ~3years ago because stable version didn't switch to HDR properly with my setup.

how should i know if it is 3 years old no.
the newest version that has a win 11 fix is not even 6 month old here.
https://www.videohelp.com/software/madVR
should be the beta from here.
it will stop working in a couple months... so that's that.
