RV9: How to make RealOne behave nicely

RV9: How to make RealOne behave nicely

I wanted to reduce the information overload in the RV9 Info post, and move the information on how to make RealOne behave nicely into its own thread, since it is rather detailed (unfortunately).

Download the free player here.

Opera, Mozilla or other non-IE browser recommended. IE will start an ActiveX download app, harmless, but a little scary. [Please let me know ASAP if this link does not provide a direct download of a free player, and I will update it]

First, regarding the impolite behavior of older players: Yes, we know. We have received the message so many times by now. In that respect, the latest RealOne V2 is better than older RealPlayers, and on OS X, it has received great feedback. On Windows you still have to do the following, which isn't too bad, but still could have been better:

Choose Custom Install
Uncheck all the boxes you don't like for stuff on the desktop and quicklaunch bar.
Check only the media types you want it to play. The box for "maintain media type preference", should be unchecked by default, but if it isn't, uncheck it
Start RealOne, go to Tools->Preferences->Automatic Services, and uncheck what you don't like there. If you uncheck everything, Message Center will start only when you run RealOne, and there should be no background process realsched.exe running. Then when Message Center does start you can set Options->Delivery Preference to "Once or twice a month", and in Options->Personalize Message Center, uncheck everything.
Go to Tools->Preferences->General and set On startup display to "Player only". That way, no browser, and it starts much quicker. That's about it. If you don't like to View clip info while playing music, Select View->Album Info->Hide.
However, even now, Message Center may pop up while you have RealOne open, which can be rather annoying. Fortunately, there appears to be a way to prevent even this.
 • Go to c:\program files\common files\real\Update_OB. There should be three .exe files there (realevent.exe, realsched.exe, rnathchk.exe).
 • First make sure you have turned off auto update features in the player according to the instructions above).
 • Open Task Manager, and kill any real...exe processes that might be running.
 • Rename or move away these 3 .exe files (I just moved them to a new folder).
Now, MessageCenter should be gone, at least on my system, it will not even come up if I press the little envelope button, which normally brings it up. Everything else seems to be working normally, but I can not guarantee anything..

Alternatively, try Gabest's Media Player Classic. After you have installed RealOne, MPC will play all your RealMedia files, just go to MPC's options->formats and select RealMedia in the list of formats. MPC has amazing list of video playback related features, some of which are missing from RealOne, for instance a long list of Pan&Scan settings. MPC's custom RealMedia renderer is nice for sub-titles, but may increase CPU usage significantly, and introduce some tearing and jitter.

Note that distributing so called codec packs, which is nothing but re-distribution of copyrighted RealNetworks codec DLLs and a few registry keys, is not allowed. Codec packs are also known to cause problems installing RealOne afterwards, unless properly un-installed.

hi,

i hope the realone v3 will support fully smil2 because actually a lot of function were disable (i want to create some chapters but there is some restriction for the smil).
and i think a size for your player under 8Mb will be great

hi,

@karl
i hope v3 will add better smil support, and of course possibility to use ogg and ac3 in the movies (even if real audio is great ).

@midiguy
i am not sure it the correct thread to speak about this but normaly i will add :

compressibility test
subtitle transparency/permanent
menu/chapters in smil
yv12 (if vobsub/textsub converted).
