Delay mean before or after?

Hallo,

when I demux the ac3-files from the vob-files using DVD2AVI the ac3-files sometimes have a delay. What does a delay of 79ms mean? Is the audio 79ms before the video or is it the other way?
Iīve searched this in this forum on this simple question about one hour, and havenīt found an answer.

Thx,
Dirk

a delay of +79 ms means the audio starts after the video by 79 ms
a delay of -79 ms means the audio is ahead by 79 ms

(and you made me doubt for a second there )

Thank you!

I know it is a very simple question, but in almost every program to encode a video you only have to enter the value and the program thinks instead of the user...
