Yeah, 512x512 is really a thumbnail image size these days. Smaller thumbnails have value in many applications, but they're not the "main thing" people are optimizing for.

Early-stage encoders, and reference encoders in...

Early-stage encoders, and reference encoders in general, tend to be very tuned for metrics without much psychovisual optimization. They're also optimized for moving images more than still frames.

That's absolutely the tension in practical encoder development and tuning. Golden eyeball hours are really expensive and scarce, with metrics orders of magnitude cheaper. So, how do you make things...

My understanding is that the original VMAF was trained only on x264 encodes, mainly with variation in CRF and frame size. I would hope Netflix has incorporated other codecs and a broader set of...

That was originally true about VMAF, but more recent versions have a mode to turn off the extra contrast bias. Since VMAF is a machine learning model trained on subjective ratings, updated subjective...

AOM seems to care about VMAF as well, which is the least-bad broadly available metric. But not even VMAF solves the problem of how to score temporal variations in quality, like I or B frame strobing....

Yeah, there's a big impact of personal preference on psychovisual tradeoffs. People definitely tune for personal preference, and then prefer their own tunings. That's a big reason double-blind MOS...

The challenge is that wavelet transforms for interframe encoding have been tried many times, and have never resulted in anything competitive with block-based encoding and motion estimation. So unless...

I believe that project is focused on lowering ENCODING time for video codecs. This would be stuff like the ASICs YouTube is building. Pixels-per-second/watt is quite important for UGC like FaceBook...

I don't directly deal with the amazon.com catalog side of things, but I do imagine we account for a material share of all images delivered globally. How does NHW compare to AVIF and HEIF H.264 for...

Your best bet to do something with NHW is to make a JavaScript-compatible implementation of it so people can view the files without needing to use extra software. That would encourage experimentation...

The "neatness" aspect wouldn't be appealing to the mezzanine market at all. The goal of a mezzanine codec is to serve as a high quality input to additional filtering and then recompression with...

I can see places where AI can absolutely enhance encoding. We're seeing ML-enhanced encoders already, and ML-enhanced scalers for improved playback. ML improvements to various in-loop filters are...

Alas, subjective evaluation comes after PSNR evaluation. VMAF seems to be used more and more, but has its own limitations (like not being able to accurately score adaptive quantization).

AOM definitely does not prioritize "extremely fast" ;). And the whole VPx and libaom/libvpx architecture was very PSNR focused back to the On2 days. I think they would struggle to integrate any tools...

Wow, a minute for how big an image?

I don't sweat reference encoder speed much, because there are hugely unoptimized. I'm sure intra-only will be 100x faster in practical implementations. And...

Yeah, the problem with the whole VPx series that AV1 inherited is that On2 had a PSNR-Above-All ethos for their encoders, believing that was the key thing that would drive adoption of their codecs....

No problem. I generally find HEIC to do well as a JPEG superset, particularly in its ability to do nice sharp edges. Using --tskip can help a lot with mixed natural/synthetic content.

Oh, I think there's a very real chance that VVC might get traction as an image codec! But getting broad decoder support is a precondition, and is mainly driven by video use cases.
