I have an Apex model ADV-3800 vcr/dvd combo.
I had no problems until the other day when I popped in a dvd to play and I got nothing on the screen at all... just black.
I tried a couple other dvds and the same thing. The counter works fine and will show that there is a dvd inside but I just get nothing on the screen... no audio either.
I was wondering if this could be caused by a bad coax cable.
I called Apex and they told me to unplug the machine to reset it... then they said it could be that the lens is just dirty... but I really dont think that is the problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you addressed any or all of these possible causes yet (Replacethe cable, unplug and replug the player, run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the player)?

Hi there. Well I suppose I havent done the cable bit yet because I asked about it here ;) ;) ;) The other two, well yeah I did with the power cycle with tech guy on the phone and the cleaning I actually spent 12 bucks at wall mart for a cleaner that had on screen things to work with as well, then I was thinking... thats pointless because I cant view anything.
I also got to thinking... the last time I used it what I did.
See, I dont know about other players, because I have had this one for a long time, but when you are watching a dvd and then press stop and then press play again... it will pick up where it left off...you dont need to press pause. I dont know if other dvd players do this and I dont know if that keeps the laser on or not.
So, the last time I used it I may have had the machine on for over 24 hours while I had watched a dvd and pressed stop. So I dont know if this might have burned out a laser or something.
Anyway, I suppose I can check the coax cable that runs from the unit to my cable box... but my thinking is if that cable were actually bad, then I wouldnt get any signal on my tv at all. I dunno.

Try popping the case open, and checking the connections to the mainboard, perhaps some resoldering is in order.
Also, you must have a really old TV if you're using coax...can you try Composite/S-Video/Component etc with another TV mayhaps?

Every DVD player I've ever seen has a start-up screen of some kind...
If you can't see this screen (regardless of whether a disc is in the player or not), then the first thing you must do is check your cables and connections.... And report back!

if it has progressive playback make sure you have it set to interlaced, usually there is an I/P button on remotes. not all tvs can handle progressive output and can just show a black screen.
