Hi there i have just got a new lap top with what i think is a Dual Layer drive, i have also just purchased ONE Blank Dual Layer DVD R

What i am very interested to know is,

bearing in mind i have succesfully used DVD Shrink to Backup a couple of Videos, the capacity of these DVD's were obviously well over 4.7gig, but DVD Shrink did it's stuff extremely well and fitted it all on the DVD R.

So will DVD Shrink detect that my DVD R is of larger capacity than 4.7gig and so wont need to compress the original quite so much, if at all ???? plus of course DVD Shrink might also tell me that my DVD Writer isnt Dual LAYER COMPATIBLE !!!!!!!

phew does that make sense ?.

If, in fact, your burner is capable of D/L burning, there's absolutely no need to use DVD Shrink.

Use DVD Decrypter v. 3.54 in "ISO mode" and first "Read ISO" (Decrypt and write to hard drive) and then "Write ISO" (burn to disc) - and select the "MDS" file as the source for burn information (So that the layer break will be properly set).

You can also use DVD Decrypter v.3.54 to determine whether your burner is capable of burning D/L (Tools>>Drive>>Capabilities)

thanks a million thanks friend that is excellent info, I havent got or needed De-Crypter yet, gr8

:) :) later, gr8 i downloaded and run the decrypter program and YES it tells me i can write to DVD +R but not -R, so my next question is how do i find out if i have the right type of DVD R (DL) ?

To your first post:
a DVD-5 (single layer DVD) holds 4,7GB (with factor 1000) which is 4,3772161006927490234375 GB of Data. A DVD-5 you buy in your local store has the same size, it doesn't hold more data or whatever. So theres no magic to it (sounded to me like magic in your post ;) )
So now, if your drive can burn dual layer, either DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL then (or both), as already mentioned, there is no need to shrink. A DVD+/-R DL (called DVD 9) holds 8,5GB (again with 1000) which turns out to be 7,9162418842315673828125 GB of Data. This is again same to a DVD 9 you buy at your local store.
So you can copy DVD 9 1:1

Now answering your question: Take a look at the disc. If it has the +R Logo then it is obviously DVD+R if it has the -R Logo on it, then it is -R. The size is also printed on the inlay somewhere, either 4,7GB for DVD 5 or 8,5GB for DVD 9

Thanks buddy for the precise details, it looks like i'm OK, i found a program that identifies the DVD, which is otherwise unmarked anywhere, LOL.

So with the help i have recieved here, i am well fixed up now with more information than i ever had before !, TA.
