The most fascinating menu you have ever seen

I do not know if this is a good question to ask... but I am still gone ask it because I am curious. I ran into some amazing menus lately (Every new dvd now has a animated menu).

My favourite has to be Lord of the Rings (Extended Edition) Triology or Matrix triology, and I want to know what other people like.

So, Here is a simple question

Which DVD has the Moist fascinating menu you have ever seen???

Offhand, I remember two that really impressed me:

My experience is rather limited, but there's one that really stands out -- the BBC's Chronicles of Narnia.

one of my personal favourites is the menu to rob zombie's "house of 1000 corpses" ... twisted and brilliant.

I believe the random Star Wars menus on Episode DVD (or maybe Ep2) actually won an award for menu design. :)

hehe... too bad the platinum menus are so boring. really ugly design, too.

the Appleseed menus have animated subpics, but in a real "why bother" way :). also, animated subpics can really mess with some DVD players. to bring up Eva again, there's a particular bit where shiji's having a real flashy nightmare sequence when he's sucked into unit 01. subtitles saying "enemy" pop up at an amazing speed during this sequence, along with really fast talking (so loads of text on the screen, updating very fast). this made my DVD player (hyundai hy632ps) actually stop for a few seconds while it loaded more subs. also happened on a no-name "conia" dealy, but that's no worry as it doesn't even execute command sequences properly, so nothing plays right on it :)

al for under $50CAD :P
meanwhile my friend's $150USD sony that he imported from a from in seatle had troubles playing dvds, it could even play s/vcds and could only handle 192kbps mp3 :P

For me, it was the motions and transitions that made them memorable. Screenshots wouldn't do them justice.

The J-Lo DVD had this rhythmic beat that was perfectly timed with the transitions, a really nifty effect. ;)

Both Ep. I and II had multiple (4, I think) menu sets that played at random and Ep. III is going to as well.

I don't think any Menus have ever actually fascinated me but here are some that I liked:

Star wars original triology: I like these better than the prequel menus. It was so cool how they isolated the actors and just made it look like they were hanging out around the ship or whatever.

Memento Limited Edition: You have to understand the movie, he's got no long term memory so he forgets where he is and what he's doing every few minutes and the menus do the same to you. The buttons disappear and shuffle around to different places. Just thought it was clever.

Shrek: Just fits the movie well and displays all of the characters in funny ways.

Indiana Jones Triology: Each movie uses a different thematic element to wipe the screen to refresh it with new clips from the movie. When it makes a transition to a new menu it just plays this wipe at the start of the transition. The effect is that the transition just appears to be a continuation of the menu's playback...in other words it really looks very seamless.

Cabin Fever: Horrible movie but menu's are nice. Lots of gore and sex just like the movie and it is filled with easter eggs.

In general, I also like the menus with seamless transistions and/or loops. Shows that they put some effort into it. Though it'd be safe to assume they put in a lot of work for boxset releases (I hope).

I think the menus on Requiem for a Dream are quite nice (not too complicated, but they use a very good scene and music from the movie).

Also, on an artistic level, the menus from the "Tool - Salival" DVD (a DVD with music videos by Tool) are ... well... very... I can't say good because they're hardly usable (there's no text and you'll never know where you will end up, but the design is really nice ;) )
