I have made backups of many DVDs so far using DVDRemake Pro and DVD Rebuilder. My question is simple. Why is this forum labeled 'the way it's supposed to be'? What is so much better about using these progs?

2 years ago there was "Big 3" and "One Click" DVD back up methods. One click methods use transcoding and Big 3 used encoding. When this statement was made it was to reflect the better quality of backup with encoding rather than transcoding. At this time there were only these two options available.

Today I wouldn't take that statement literally and maybe it should be changed to avoid this type of confusion.

I believe that is the reason but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong :)

Well it basically has to do with the fact that all the mods (and a lot of users hopefully) of this forum think a backup means a full backup. So including all the assets that are on the original dvd (except maybe some warnings etc), so not stripping out extras, menus etc.

And pike007 is also right that back then there were not that much methods to make a high quality backup using a mpeg2 encoder such as CCE. So it also has to do with the fact that much higher quality CAN be achieved while using this method opposed to using a transcoder like DVD shrink.

Now there's also DVD RB of course which can make high quality backups using CCE or other mpeg2 encoders. Personally I've always used this big3 method. For one part because I've been involved since the very beginning so grew with it. On the other hand I believe it just offers me a little bit more flexibility and options to make a higher quality backup.

I have only ever done a full DVD backup (but I'm trying to soften up D3s7 about the need to eliminate previews ;) ) so I completely missed that one. I remember now that DVD2one was only capable of movie only backups at that time.

I would also like to say that it's up to you (the individual) to decide what looks best (ie: Transcoder vs. Encoder). My above post makes it sound like encoders are the best (I was basing that on my OWN observations)

I would think that's the observation of most people with good eyes :)

Problem is that a lot of people don't do fair comparisons. They say well I can get the same result with dvdshrink and CCE. On one side they do a movie only transcode and on the other hand a full backup with CCE for example. If you do a movie only backup with a transcoder the quality can be great of course if the movie is not that long.

If we're talking about comparing a full dvd backup of let's say 8 GB it's my opinion that CCE will give your superior quality.
