View Full Version : Small question about bitrates...

After the PREPARE phase of DVD-RB you can see some info about the bitrate, which in some cases (usually with longer movies, or films with alot of extras) help me to decide if it is worth going through the often lengthy encoding process. My question is this : What exactly is the difference between "Overall Bitrate" and "HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates"? High/Low/Typical is maybe a bit more self explanatory, but could someone give me some more insight as to how these numbers differ and exactly how they are calculated?

Cmon. 33 views and not one reply? Am I to assume that not one of the pros here has any idea? Jdobbs, come to the rescue.... please. lol.

Overall bitrate it the bitrate needed (as an average) across the entire DVD in order to fit on a DVD-5.

During the PREPARE phase, DVD-RB scans the entire DVD and examines the video. During that scan it keeps track of the original allocation of bandwidth based upon the original authoring. It then uses that information in order to calculate bitrates needed to keep the quality consistent. The HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL represents numbers used for each of the segments. So the HIGH means one of the segments required a bitrate at that rate in order to keep consistent quality, LOW means that the lowest of them only needed that bitrate to maintain quality -- the average should always match or at least be close to the Overall bitrate.

OK. I know it was sort of a stupid question, but I thought that I may have been missing out on an opportunity to get the best possible quality. Thanks for the simple yet informative response Jdobbs. As always you come through in a pinch. :)

i have a question too,
it says by exemple reduction size of 50%

then it says something like that:"space saving 24% for extra reduction"(I use half space saving)
is it already included in the 50% or it is at the end 74%????
