NO SOUND WHEN CAPTURING Hi8 HOME MOVIE?

Hi.
I've just got the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250 to start copying my hi8 home movies I can capture ok from TV with sound but when I try with my Sony TRV78E hi8 cam I have no sound I have tried connecting via s-video lead and composite.
Do I have the wrong leads? Are there different s-video leads?
Maybe I have the settings all wrong? I am a total newbie to all this and not got a clue what settings to use

MPEG2 12.0MBit/sec

There are so many options to choose not sure what is the best for me.
Do i need to setup the audio too?
All I want to do is copy and edit my home movies and burn them to DVD or VCD.

Please help and please write like your talking to a 5 year old lol

And what free editing software do you recomend?

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

Neither S-video nor composite video carry sound. You need a separate cable for that purpose. (RF connections do carry sound, but you also give up some video quality when using RF compared with composite or S-video). I don't know the Hauppage card, but most PCI cards require the sound to be processed by your soundcard, separately. Not only do you need a separate cable, you also need to set your soundcard to record "line-in" or some similar term -- they vary by driver -- rather than "mic-in."

I recommend taking a look at both our FAQ and our Capture Guide regarding software.

If I were talking to a 5 year old, it wouldn't be about capture connections.

The PVR-250 encodes the audio internally to MP2 so you just need to feed the audio to the card somehow.
