what software can I use to export a specific frame as jpg/bmp from a m2v or vob stream e.g frame 34,432 etc.

don't think that will work, I want to specify an exact frame for direct comparisons so I can't rely on pressing the button at the approximate time.

it will; but you will need 4 things to do this:

powerdvd, a space bar, a scrolling mouse, and the ability to press C (when need be)

thanks for the help. I've worked it out with virtual dub or the mpeg2 mod.

Load mpeg file
hit ctrl+g and enter start frame
hit home to set selection start
hit ctrl+g and enter end frame
hit end to set selection end
then go file>save as image sequence and select either bmp, targa or jpeg

can i do this in virtual dub or do I need to do it prior to importing via an avisynth script?

I prefer when in VDM and ffdshow to use TomsMoComp and use as you did sequence frame recording

why should the video need to be deinterlaced???

A lot of mpeg2 streams are not interlaced to begin with, and keeping it interlaced might be desirable anyways depending on what you want to do...

I understand what you are saying and it's a valid point. I wll be looking at the clips interlaced if possible but being a curious type I just wanted to know how different people deinterlace.

For the record what i'm look it as a direct comparison of interlaced pal dv video converted to mpeg2. I've only just got the camera and wanted to do some comparisons between different encoders and avisynth filters.

I will post the results if anyones interested although I'm sure this sort of thing will have been done many times before.
