Hi, I have a few avis that I wanted to compress using winrar and then I also wanted to create the par2 and sfv files too, but I don;t really know how to do it.

I know how to use winrar/quickpar/quicksfv etc, but I wasnt sure what the standards were, eg.

How big should the rar files be?
SFV first or Par2 first?
How big a percentage of the total file size should the recovery volumes be
etc.

Thanks in advance

I'm not an expert , but i'm sure that compressing (zip, rar) video files might not be the best idea. You end up with same file size as source, maybe some bytes smaller (unless this video is dummy empty file). If you want to save space - you need to compress this video using any lossy video compression codecs (like Xvid)

Ahh, sorry I didnt make my self clear, the home movies are already Xvid, but I wanted to post them on Usenet, whenever I download other avis from usenet they are always split rars, and i know there is a reason why, but I don;t know in what order it is done, and what the maximum size limit of a single rar is.

I know this is not really a video encoding questions (hence general forum), but I was hoping there might be somebody can guide me to some faq (ive looked everywhere I can think of, and tried a whole selection of keywords) or guide or give me some pointers as to how to do it.

Is see - if you looking for splitting big archieves into smaller parts - than almost any archieve program can do it.
TAke a WinRar for example - In general tab you have "volume size" option - where you specify each part's size. Most other tools can do it , like Total Commander.

Af for the reason - it's probably becaue in most cases one cannot upload too large files at once. For example my mail has 10mb upload limit. (gmail) So if I want to send 50 mb - i need to split it into 5 parts.
Good luck.
