can CDVC edit format be recovered?

hi all. i'm not too sure what the problem i'm facing is, but i have a theory...

a hard disk came in today with some completely unreadable DV files - media player classic throws an error window, then plays green and pink vertical lines, virtualdub crashes on opening, and mplayer says the index is b0rk and then hangs.

Gspot said they were CDVC files - IIRC that's canopus's DV codec. having used their DV converter before, and seeing it's options, i thought these files might be that weird canopus editing format.

whether they are or not, the DV converter says it can't convert these... :(

does anyone have experience with this format? is it recoverable on a computer other than the one it was created on?

we're probably going to ask the client to just send some standard DV files, or some other readable format (digibeta :))

Try a FourCC editor to change it from CDVC to DVSD.

i wish it were that simple. this is some kind of in-place editing format - virtualdub wont touch it (there's both dvsd and cdvs fourcc's registered on this machine), and mplayer complains of bad interleaving.

i've read a little about canopus having some kind of DV editing mode that seems to require the file to be locked and not manipulated at all - perhaps it writes edits directly into the avi index or something? whatever it does i can't get anything useful out of these files.

i guess it's time to ask for a better source... like a tape :)

Have you tried this convertor? It claims to be able to convert Canopus-captured DV clips to normal formats.
