Nero AVC vs x264 AVC - good comparisons yet? AVI or MP4?

I am trying to decide which to use to transcode a ton of my DVD's and HD (OTA) content to my MediaCenter 2005.

1. The MP4 container WILL be the standard - correct?
2. I really have not seen a good comparison of the x264 opensource and Nero AVC - has anyone done some with HD content?
