View Full Version : GK - xvid to xvid

i would like to convert my xvids so they can play on my standalone dvd player (Oppo digitial), which only supports the following xvid resolutions:
720x480, 720x576, 704x480 704x576, 352x240 and 352x288
the player stretches resolutions other than listed above to fill the screen-unwatchable. also, the set up function (the ability to change tv parameters) on the player is disabled when playing an xvid file.
I have tried several permutations of checked and unchecked boxes, incoming and out video settings, but no luck.
is there a sticky on how to convert XVID to XVID using Gordian Knot, or some homemade 'recipes' others have had success with?

(I presume you have an XviD codec installed on your system)
One simple method would be to load the file DIRECTLY into VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD and apply the "Resize" filter...

Hello and welcome to the forum,
I have the Oppo also, outputting to an HDTV over DVI. You can do what you want using FitCD, but they'll fix that issue one of these days with a firmware upgrade, and then you'll be stuck with all those screwy AVIs.
Anyway, open your AVI in FitCD, set Source for 1:1 Monitor, and Output for DVD 720x480 Anamorphic. Using a 640x272 AVI as a test and with ITU resizing on, it gave me:
LanczosResize(720,364,2,0,636,272)
AddBorders(0,58,0,58)
That's for NTSC resizing and will add the black bars to the AVI so it will look "normal" when played through the Oppo to a widescreen TV set. The stupid player, instead of just scaling the AVI image, resizes it as it would a 16:9 DVD. It's great for DVDs, though. You can find FitCD here:
http://shh.sysh.de/fitcd.html
By the way, there's a workaround for 1.33:1 AVIs (such as those at 640x480 or 512x384) involving using the Component connection. And your 1.85:1 AVIs (such as 640x352 or similar) won't have to be reencoded. It's just those wider than 1.78:1 AVIs that get all stretched over the Oppo. No excuse for that.

Yep, like I said, it doesn't scale properly, but resizes to fill the screen. Over DVI, the 1.33:1 AVIs get stretched horizontally to fill the screen also. But like I said, there's a workaround foir that. I think the problem is that it uses a Faroudja chipset over DVI, and maybe Faroudja doesn't have any way to scale, but only resize. I'm not really sure myself. Because it also has a MediaTek chipset, the MT 1389FE, and it's the only DivX player I've ever heard of with a MediaTek chipset that has this problem, whereas all the ones with ESS chipsets have it. But the MediaTek isn't used over DVI.
I've been wanting to bring up this player down in the Players forum, because in all other respects it's an absolutely great player. But as long as AVI playback is broken, forget it. Oppo is aware of the problem, and sooner or later it'll get fixed. Support is excellent, and there have already been a number of firmware upgrades fixing a number of issues. For the price, its DVD playback is unbeatable. It got the 2nd highest score ever in the Secrets Of Home Theater DVD Player shootout. It costs $200, and was beaten only by a $3500 Denon player:

A couple of the problems mentioned in the review (OPDV971H) have since been fixed with firmware upgrades. As a DVD player, if you have either a DVI or HDMI connection on your TV set (it comes with your choice of either a DVD2DVI or DVI2HDMI cable), I can highly recommend it. As an AVI player it leaves a lot to be desired at this point. Here's some more info. There are a couple of huge threads at the AVS Forums:

Many thanks for the information manono,
Indeed I think it would be most useful if you could start a thread about this player over in the "Hardware Players" section of the forum ;)
Cheers
