As some one who has lived with the effects of a flood zone for many year, my hopes, thought and prayers go out to the families and individuals caught by thIS awfull natural disaster.

Please join me with a thought (or prayer) for them.

And in the true spirit of kindness, gasoline prices have gone up 25% (at least here in Canada...to $1.25 a litre) I daren't suppose those profits are going to help the flood victims and their families?

Profits? Read the news man. Oil prices went up BECAUSE of Katrina, not to take advantage of those effected. The Gulf Coast is one of the world's largest producers of oil and virtually every one of those refineries had to shut down.

Before Katrina the Gulf coast produced 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, right now they are producing .13 million barrels a day.

Yes, lets keep this thread pure and express support of those people. I appreciate that this thread is outside the scope of the forum use , but I think the unfortunate people in New Orleans et al need and deserve a mention however brief. If only to help prompt support by the governemnt of richest nation in the world for its people.

Gas prices, and oil prices at larger are a very good example to see how the free market works. With oil production in the US taking a dive, and with a steady demand, the price will go up to the point where demand and supply are in an equilibrium again.

And I have a few links here and there to gallerys with thousands of pictures of whole families looting valuables from cars and buildings and then stealing said cars. What you hear on the news is only the tip of the iceberg. The local police force there was surrounded by gun weilding locals yesterday morning. They had to call in the military for a rescue op! Didn't hear how many rednecks were killed if any. Most of em ran away. But still. There is alot of stuff you are not hearing on the news.

Plus, I would be interested to know how many other countries charge more for diesel than petrol?

1.53 euros here (=holland) for a litre of petrol, diesel a few cents cheaper :p

Excuse me folks, but this tread was meant to show SYMPATHY to those people who have lost everything. NOT to complain or boast about oil prices etc etc.

PLEASE get your heads out of your pockets / wallets and show some humanity.

Surely a few kind words of sympathy cost us all nothing per litre / gallon.

I'm not trying to be unsympathetic, but I don't think any discussion of these types of accidents should be discused in a forum. People are always going to be off topic and in the end a bunch of people on the internet saying "that sucks, good luck" doesn't accomplish anything. If you really want to do something, go voulenteer at a shelter or send a donation to those family in needs.

I as well would like to point out to the rules (I'd have done this earlier but rule #15 isn't phrased to be really obvious fitting in this case -- this isn't politics or religious... [I know that by definition politics is everything affecting people in general]) and hope some superadmin or responsible mod will close this thread.
