View Full Version : Feature Request: Reading ISO Directly

Hi All,
Really enjoying DVD-RB Pro, especially the batch processing functionality. However, there is a limitation if you are wanting to deal strictly with ISO images only, as for DVD-RB to be able to view the contents of an ISO image you must first mount the ISO with something like Daemon tools. This limits the batch processing capabilities to only 4 movies at a time when dealing with ISO as this is all Daemon tools can mount at any one time.
I'd imagine getting things like ILVU processing bulletproof is Jdobbs priority in heading for a final release, so something like this wouldn't be even on the cards for a while yet. I just think that it would be great if one day DVD-RB Pro could read ISO images directly so that the only limitation when working with ISO images in batch mode is your physical HDD space.

I think the reasons why things are done this way right now is because it is likely MacroVision, movie studios, etc. would decry this as "bypassing, circumventing, or reverse engineering" their software-based protection system. If a user uses another tool like DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, etc. then the developer (hiya, jdobbs) of DVD Rebuilder isn't on the "hook" for a DMCA violation --- nor for that matter, facilitating same.
That may sound paranoid, but believe me here in the USA such companies with a lot of cash and influence tend to shape the laws (not to mention, very litigious for those who don't follow them); JDobbs is likely to be very aware of this. I would expect no change to this aspect unless and until copyright and technology laws are rewritten with fair use in mind (don't hold your breath).

I understand your point, but my idea had nothing to do with wanting DVD-RB to be able to rip a DVD. My idea was based around being able to read an already ripped ISO, so there would be no circumvention of copyright protection methods at all.

use alcohol 120% and you can have upto 30 virtual drives.

Why not talk to Daemon Tools about upping the limit. I agree with NightSta in that jdobbs should keep RB to just encoding the dvds. It makes it much easier to focus on that then to add ISO and then have DMCA or some other company/entity after you.

Sorry, reading your post one wouldn't necessarily conclude that's what you meant. However, I understand --- you're wanting an "AIO" (All In One) solution. I'd rather a piece of software excel at one thing, than be mediocre on all things. Not to say you ask for the impossible, just the improbable :)

I dunno, it seems like a logical step for Rebuilder to take after ILVU processing and everything else gets ironed out.

I'm not wanting an AIO solution at all. In fact I have little doubt that Jdobbs has intentionally left out any ripping functionality from DVD-RB so that there is no illegal copy protection circumvention done by DVD-RB at all. I totally agree with this as I would never suggest something that would put DVD-RB in the firing line such as what happened with DVD-Decrypter.
What I was asking is that once you've ripped your DVD to an ISO image using DVD-Decrypter, then have the functionality in DVD-RB to simply read that ISO image directly without needing any other 3rd party software.

I think this would be an excellent idea to be able to read straight from the iso image.

I myself have switched lately from ripping to iso files to ripping to folders. There are two pros to this approach.
1) I can pre-process the source (delete trailers etc) without ripping the files ones more from the iso files.
2) Daemon tools file transfer is a lot slower than reading directly from my raid0 setup. A prepare phase directly from files takes about 4 mins to complete, while it takes more than 10 from daemon tools.
I can't really think of a drawback to ripping to folders.

@kappa
Well, since pre-processing is frowned upon for beta testers, that wouldn't help us much. Also, if DVD-RB were to read ISO files that were on your hard drive, wouldn't that be read at the same speed as something ripped in file mode?
