View Full Version : VOB Demuxing

I have 4 VOBs right now that make up a main movie. Each vob is split into 1gb files. No authoring app will take vobs as input without IFO files. Is there a program out there that can a) join the 4 VOBs together, and b) demux them thus creating a single .m2v and .ac3 file?

Use IFOEdit to create new .IFO and .BUP files...

I've never used IFOEdit before. You can import VOBs and it will generate IFO files for you?

Also, I'd still like to know if there's an app that join vobs together, and then demux them into a .m2v and .ac3 file. I know I can get the .ac3 via DGIndex but that still leaves me without a video file.

Yes

(There's no need to join the .VOBs)

Once you've used IFOEdit to create the .IFO and .BUP files, you can then:

1) Use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode (NOT ISO mode]

2) Select "Stream Processing"

3) Select the video and audio streams you want to retain (DEselect all other streams)

4) Click on the 'Demux' radio button

Let us know of your success ;>}

How do I do this in IFOEdit? I have never ever used it before. When I click on the "Open" button it seems it only wants to open IFO or BUP files.

Use the "Create IFO's" button in IFOEdit.

You can also use PgcDemux to demux the video and audio streams.

Don't load any IFO in IfoEdit, or the Create IFO button will be disabled. Just open IfoEdit and click on the Create IFOs button, and follow the instructions. It's easy.

To join VOBs together, you just need to concat them. You can do that with the COPY DOS command:COPY File1.VOB+File2.VOB+File3.VOB Output.VOBBut, usually, you don't need to join the VOBs.

Also, your VOBs needs to be renamed to ...

VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB

...since IfoEdit only creates a single Title DVD and your movie will be Title 1. Don't forget to click on your "Get VTS Sectors" button aftger saving.

No authoring app will take vobs as input without IFO files. Though this is not the way to go, DVD Lab can accept VOB input. Just wanted to correct you with a example authoring software.

I just thought about something. If I did demux the audio and video in DGIndex, the chapter points would be lost yes? Or do they stay within the .m2v video file?

@blutach: Thanks for that IFOEdit guide link. That really helped me with this IFO creation stuff. I got a few questions about it though. Besides, specifying the audio tracks language, do we have to specify anything else? Or is the language the only needed specification? Things like App Mode, Quantisation, Extension, Language Type, and Multichannel Extension I didn't really know what to put. Also, is there a way to preview the audio tracks within IFOEdit so you can know what language to put? I know the first track is English, but it also has 2 more. Finally, do we have to specify the subtitle languages?

Yes, specify the subtitle languages too.

If coding mode is AC3, then application mode will usually be unspecified. Quantisation is always DRC. Sample rate will be either 48 or 96 and channels will be 1-6 depending on what you have. These are all easily set in PgcEdit afterwards.

To preview the now complete DVD in IfoEdit, click DVD Play.

The audio specs (except the language code) should be set correctly by your muxer (either Muxman or IfoEdit). So, normally, you don't have to edit these parameters.

However, if you make a note of your chapter point times, MuxMan provides an option for you to re-create them (using frame numbers).

You can also create the celltimes.txt file (needed by muxman to recreate the chapters) automatically.
Open the DVD in PgcEdit, double-click on your title PGC to open the PGC Editor, and click on the "celltimes.txt" button. Use an offset of 0. Save the file where you want, and use it in muxman.

Speaking from personal experience, I've used MuxMan to create many DVD muxes with chapters, without needing celltimes.txt files.

But my DVD (VOB and IFO) muxes are very simple. And usually only comprise the main movie video stream and one AC3 audio stream, with chapters :)

Okay.... Just for you I ripped backed up the "movie only" section of The Italian Job (original version with Micheal Caine).

First, I fire up DVD Decrypter in "IFO mode" along with "Stream Processing" and "File Splitting" set to "None". Like this: -

http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/1949/dvddecryptersettings8um.png

When the ripping process has completed you should see something like this. Plus the all important "Chapter Information" text file: -

http://img323.imageshack.us/img323/1351/italianjob4kx.png

Second, I fire up MuxMan and input the required audio and video streams, plus the "Chapter Information" text file. Like this: -

http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/3013/muxman0qe.png

As you can see above MuxMan has correctly recognised all 15No chapters.

When MuxMan has finished doing it's thing, you should get a fully working DVD, with chapters, that should look something like this when opened in your media player: -

Good luck you guys

Right, but you used a celltime.txt file. It is called "Chapter Information - IfoEdit.txt", but it's exactly the same usage.

@SeeMoreDigital

Thank you for your mini guide and r0lZ beat me to the same reply. Muxman can take any text file just as long as the contents (chapter frames) are in correct format. I can easily rename my celltimes.txt file to 2COOL.txt and it would work. ;)

Well at least I/we now know we are talking about the same thing!

Technically it should also be possible to de-mux each 1GB .VOB file to their elementary streams using DGIndex and feed them into MuxMan.

This is what I do when creating new "Show Reel" compilations for my clients. I also insert a few frames of black (with AC3 audio) between each clip and add a chapter point.... It seems to work really well :D
