I might start making TV captures soon and I will use Vorbis aoTuVb4 @ q6 for audio. I was wondering whether to use Xvid or x264 and what container to stick to in order to ensure compatibility and smooth playback. I would have searched, but didn't know what to search for. Thanks in advance.

Are you are talking about "smooth playback" in stand-alone players?

I'm not sure whether you've posted your question in the correct forum section!

SeeMoreDigital: I probably didn't choose the right words as I know nothing about standalone MPEG4 playback. If I remember correctly, activating certain ASP features like QPel, packed bitstream, using custom matrices and maybe a few other things rendered the file unplayable (wether that meant erratic playback or no playback at all I don't know) in earlier players. I figured that custom matrices are still a liability and I'd like to know if there are any players that support that.

bond: so I'm stuck with AVI+MP3? Crap :(

What would you guess will be safe options to use on x264 encodes in order to ensure compatibility?

Pioneer DV-383/380 supports ogm with xvid and vorbis/mp3 audio. i read the newer Philips models support ogm too.

My Pioneer DV-575A supports playback MPEG-4/SP/ASP video with MP3/AC3 or Vorbis audio within OGM and AVI.... It's fitted with an MediaTek (MT1389xx) chip-set, so provided you don't generate MPEG-4 encodes with 3warp-point GMC you should not experience very many problems... I haven't.

There are some newer devices fitted with Sigma's EM8620L chip-set, which supports playback of high-def MPEG-1, 2 and 4 (as well as WMV9) video with MP3 and/or AC3 audio within AVI or AAC audio within MP4.... Again you must keep clear from 3warp-point GMC.

Some Sigma chip-set based players also support Vorbis audio in OGG (or OGM)... but not with MPEG-4 video!

Again...

There are currently no stand-alone players/devices that support MPEG-4/AVC (aka: h.264) decoding in hardware....
