solution for people having trouble with copying some new disks...

I tried ripping The Wedding Date last night and I was having all kinds of problems with it. No matter what I did, the vts_01_1.vob file was ending up at about 32kb, so when I tried loadin the movie in DVD2AVIdg, it was starting with the vts_01_2.vob file and the 01 file was basically a black frame.

After reading around on here a bit and trying something else I have figured out what seems to be a flawless way to get around this. Maybe some have already mentioned this, but I didn't see it.

The Wedding Date in particular has 2 Angles in the 1st PGC, so you must ultimately select Angle 1 to get English Titles. I imagine this should work for anything with protection of the kind that this disc has.

1. First use DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.3.5 to copy the whole Disc to your HDD and remember to select that it should remove all copy protection in the process (which I think you select in the settings screen that pops up the first time you start the program).

2. Create 2 more folders outside of the folder you copied the disc to. I called mine MovieRip and Temp.

3. Open up ImgTool_089 which allows you to select a DVD folder and assign it a virtual drive letter. Choose the folder that DVDFab Decrypter copied the disc to (the folder that contains AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS ... make sure to select the parent folder, NOT video_ts), choose a free drive letter, and then click "Make Drive".

4. Remove the actual DVD disc from your DVDRom Drive cause you want the next step to default to the virtual drive that you've just made with ImgTool_089.

5. Open up SmartRipper. It should automatically load the virtual drive with the movie on it.

6. Make sure you're in Movie mode, select the pgc within the vts for the movie and, in the case of a movie with 2 angles, select the proper angle.

7. Set the save folder for SmartRipper to the first of the 2 folders you created above ... in my case, this would be MovieRip.

8. Press the START button.

9. Now here's where the critical part of the process starts. In Windows Explorer make sure you're in the MovieRip folder and have it in the background behind SmartRipper. As SmartRipper goes you'll see it ripping vts_01_1.vob, and you'll notice it's actually ripping the whole file. DON'T LET THIS FOOL YOU. IT WILL NOT STAY THIS WAY!

10. As soon as SmartRipper moves to the vts_01_2.vob file, click into the MovieRip folder in Win Explorer and hit refresh (F5). The vts_01_1.vob file will probably be about 700+mb. Grab this file and drag/move it to the 2nd folder you created earlier ... in my case Temp.

11. Let the rest of the movie finish ripping in SmartRipper. When it finishes, if you go back to the MovieRip folder you will probably see there is still a vts_01_1.vob file there and it will be 32kb or so. This little bastard would have overwritten your 700+mb copy of the file that you have luckily moved.

12. Go back to the Temp folder and drag/move your 700+mb vts_01_1.vob file over to your MovieRip folder. Choose to overwrite the existing 32kb version in that folder.

13. Now you have the whole movie, with no problems, sitting in one folder. From here you can move files vts_01_1.vob to vts_01_x into the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDFab Decrypter and choose to overwrite those original vts_01 files there. No you have the whole Disc, with no problems, sitting in one folder.

14. Work your magic of choice on it for the encoding and authoring process.

Just curious to know what is the Region of your "Wedding Date" DVD?

I tried with DVD Decrypter but I have an older version. I had a hard time ripping in File mode because of the fact that the movie pgc had 2 angles, so ripping the vts_01 files gave me both angles in the same files. Also, everytime I ripped it it seemed to be copying the whole vts_01_1.vob file but when it was done ripping I'd notice that it was 32kb. The next time I tried ripping I checked in explorer and saw that the file was 700+mb so I figured the problem was solved, but when I came back to it after the process had finished, the file was 32kb again. That's when I figured that it must be writing another corrupt version of the file at the end of the process somewhere, so I just moved the 700+mb one out of the folder and then moved it back when the ripping was done, and that solved my problem.

It's actually possible that this would have worked if I had just started with the SmartRipper step onward and not worried about the DVDFab Decrypter part (I didn't try cause I'd already done that step when I realized that the vts_01_1.vob file was being overwritten at the end of the ripping process) ... but since the movie had 2 angles, I would have needed to rip the proper movie angle separately anyway ... so I figured I might as well start with the DVDFab Decrypter steps for good measure.

Had the movie only had 1 angle then this all could probably have been done in one step starting with SmartRipper and just moving the file out of the folder when it first finished being ripped and then moving it back later. I'm not sure.

But anyway, I'd seen other people talking about this issue who tried using DVD Decrypter in both File mode and ISO mode and still had trouble with the files. This worked smoothly for me so I figured some people might be able to benefit from it.

You mean as opposed to using the all-in-one apps? Is there something newer than using DVD2AVI to create a d2v file and then frameserving from it?

I still frameserve with avisynth into CCE.

I haven't been looking much into new processes since that one has always produced excellent results for me. Though I do need to get familiar with some of the tools like voblanker (or however it's spelled), pgcedit and getting a better understanding of ifoedit.
